Fort William Women’s FC 4
Orkney Women’s FC 4
Scottish Power Highlands and Islands League
On a bright, sunny afternoon in North Kessock Fort William and Orkney Women’s teams served up an entertaining end-to-end Scottish Power Highland and Island League contest.
In only Fort William’s third competitive match, the point was enough to see them retain third place in the table though they were left wondering what might have been after a strong first-half display and a fast start to the second period.
Fort William struck early when Kirsten Dodds opened the scoring on four minutes, setting the tone for a lively first half in which the Lochaber side created a host of chances.
Colette D’Ambrosio was unfortunate not to extend the lead when she clipped the crossbar on 15 minutes and a minute later Teri Fox dragged a close-range effort narrowly wide of the post.
The pressure told again on 22 minutes, Bryony Lewis sending an inswinging corner straight into the net at the back post to make it 2–0.
Orkney responded well, however and pulled a goal back through Katie Rendall on the half-hour mark before D’Ambrosio restored Fort William’s two-goal cushion with a well-taken finish three minutes later.
Orkney were not done though and Ellen Harcus narrowed the deficit again on 39 minutes to leave her team right in the contest at the interval.
Fort William could easily have gone in further ahead with Dodds also striking the crossbar on 31 minutes as the home side’s attacking intent repeatedly tested the Orkney back line.
Fort William began the second half in similarly positive fashion. Dodds doubled her personal tally on 56 minutes, finishing after a fine delivery from Maddison Macmillan, and there were further openings as Jenna Byers flashed a shot just wide and Chloe Cameron forced an excellent save as Fort looked to take firm control.
But the match turned again in the final half-hour as Orkney’s experience came to the fore. Rendall struck for a second time on 73 minutes before Sarah Seatter completed Orkney’s fightback with a late goal on 77 minutes.
Orkney’s final goals owed plenty to well-rehearsed, well-executed set pieces which left Fort William goalkeeper Sarah Riddle with little chance, while the overall contest remained competitive and played in an excellent spirit.
The draw was a fair reflection of a game of two halves yet Fort William will feel they had opportunities in the first period to build a decisive advantage.
