Tarbert will once again welcome the Jura Scottish Series (SS) fleet over the weekend Friday 23 to Monday 26 May 2025 for four days of world-class yacht racing on the waters of Loch Fyne.
Organised and run by the Clyde Cruising Club (CCC) since 1975, Tarbert has hosted this historic event for 41 years.
Jura single malt Scotch Whisky continues as the headline sponsor for the event this year and the Jura 14-year-old American Rye Cask Single Malt will feature on the prize table for all classes.
Well known yachtsman Roddy Angus returns to head up the SS team as the event chairman.
‘The Jura Scottish Series 2025 is gearing up to be a repeat of last year’s successful format,’ he said adding: ‘We are fortunate to have great support from our sponsors and a fantastic ‘Regatta Crew’ of almost 70 people!
‘All the classes are healthy with entries but we would welcome more visitors from northern waters - the entry is still open and there is a discount available for the Crinan Canal for anyone interested.’
Alongside the sailing, Tarbert showcases a full social programme off the water with something for everyone, including non-sailing visitors to enjoy. As well as pubs and restaurants getting ready for a busy weekend, food vans providing seafood, pasta and burger options will be in position for the duration of the event.
Other key sponsors this year include James Watt Dock Marina supporting the IRC fleet, Kylemark Workwear sponsoring the One Design Fleet and Holland House Electrical supporting the CYCA fleet.
Key partners in the event are Barclays, Tarbert Enterprise Company and YETI with support from North Sails, Signpost, CGL Facades, the Merson Group, Tarbert Harbour and Marlow Ropes.
Scottish Canals is the Scottish Series Transportation Sponsor. Media support for the event comes from Zostro Agency, PKC Media and Andrew Wallace Photography.
The full list of sponsors is pointed up on the website www.scottishseries.co.uk which also includes information about the event, the full entry list, daily reports and racing results.
The Fleets
Welcoming both seasoned racers and newcomers alike, the Jura Scottish Series racing is offered across three fleets – IRC, CYCA and One Design with a variety of courses for both spinnaker and non-spinnaker classes.
Larger boats are offered a coastal-option course whilst the non-coastal entry will be split into classes announced before the event. A dozen or so yachts are competing in a white sail class with a good entry also in the double handed class.
Prizes for this year’s IRC 2025 Championships incorporated within the Scottish Series event have this year been sponsored by North Sails. Over 20 yachts complete the line up this year with a wide cross section of boats racing and making it too close to call on any potential class winners.
A dedicated fleet for One-Designs will centre on the established Clyde classes and courses will be set using robotic marks. Initially piloted last year, these innovative marks were seen by race organisers and competitors alike as a really positive move. They enable the delivery of the best racing possible with a fast turnaround on setting true windward leeward courses.
One Designs
The series is nationally renowned as one of the best for one design competition. One Design racing is also offered to any class with at least six entries. Anticipated classes are the Hunter 707 fleet, Sigma 33 and Etchells.
Seven well sailed Sigma 33s including former winners Leaky Roof 2 and Mayrise will see the usual very close competition. Similarly, a really strong entry in the Hunter 707 class of a dozen boats will be very close to call as will the Etchells class which currently stands at six in the entry. It was the Etchell Bounceback who emerged the winner of both class and the overall series last year.
The CYCA fleet also offers white sail and two-handed options. This year, results will be scored under the YTC handicap system. CYCA/YTC will mix ‘round the cans’ courses with coastal options and cover spinnaker, white sail and double handed classes.
After last year’s successful trial of the ‘Introductory Class’, giving a chance for those who may not have raced before to compete in a racing event like the Scottish Series, this will take place on a separate course close to the CYCA fleet. This white sail class will incorporate a level of guidance and instruction.
With the Scottish Series being part of the Irish Sea Nations Cup, all visitors to the Series will automatically be entered and scored for this cup.
Feeder races
A feeder race from Largs for the CYCA fleet brings the fleet to Tarbert for the start of the event. Organisers offer CYCA a completely different experience based on competitive coastal racing round established or laid marks, probably including an island or two.
Shoreside, Tarbert will be abuzz with a variety of entertainment for both sailors and visitors to the event. A full social programme hosted by Tarbert Enterprise Company (TEC) will run from Thursday evening for race registration to Monday afternoon. Most activities take part in the Marquee provided by Tarbert Harbour Authority at the back of the pontoons, where the TEC bar and street food options are available on-site including breakfasts each day.
Action on and off the water
A skippers and helpers party kicks the proceedings off on Friday with music from Scott MacDonald. Saturday sees TEC host the Tarbert After School Club fund-raiser event and Funky Chicken provides children’s entertainment. Mid Argyll Radio Sailing Club will demonstrate remote-controlled yachts and the Ellen MacArthur stall will raise awareness of this important sailing charity.
Scott MacDonald, Matt McAlister and the Coaltown Daisies will entertain during the day as well as the Loch Fyne Pipe Band. The event of the evening is Big Vern and the Shootahs followed by the traditional spectacular firework display to light up Tarbert.
Sunday sees live music from Scott MacDonald again with the TEC bar open. Scott continues the music on Monday prior to the finale prize-giving and end of the Series.
A running outline of the event with photo and video content from the racecourse is planned for a display screen at Tarbert as well as on social media.
As ever, all organisations in Tarbert including the local sailing club, pull together to make the long weekend a success for everyone, both on and off the water. The Jura Scottish Series is one of the most important events of the year bringing a significant boost to the economy of the area.
Roddy Angus said ‘The planning is really coming together for an extremely exciting Scottish Series 2025. With our hard-working team we have everything set to welcome more than 100 boats competing. We are really looking forward to some great racing across the board and welcoming everyone to this special event.’
