Lochaber RFC 96
Mid Argyll 14
West Division 2
Lochaber RFC’s senior men’s team welcomed near neighbours Mid Argyll to Banavie for their second league encounter of the season on Saturday January 31.
Both sides are newly promoted with Lochaber recording a comprehensive victory in the reverse fixture earlier in the campaign.
Entering the match sitting fifth in West 2, Lochaber were within a bonus-point win of climbing to third place, currently held by Cumbernauld.
With this objective in mind every point was keenly contested, a fact reflected in the players’ attitude and motivation as they faced a Mid Argyll squad who travelled with reduced numbers.
From the opening whistle Lochaber kicked high into the visitors’ territory and aggressive defence quickly reestablished possession.
After a series of relentless phases the home side settled into their structure, combining direct forward carries with sharp deceptive back-line movement.
This balance of power and pace turned the Mid Argyll defence early with Lochaber crossing the line within the opening moments.
Despite a few handling errors, which allowed the visitors brief periods of respite, Lochaber’s momentum rarely faltered.
The home side went on to score a total of 16 tries, with Archie Campbell (4), Chris Simpson (3), Conor Taylor (3), Dylan Monk (2), Callum Boyd, Finlay Metcalfe, Scottie Diack, and Steven Traill all featuring on the scoresheet.
Callum Boyd added further points from the tee with a 50% conversion rate.
While there were many positives to take from the weekend’s performance, several aspects highlighted in recent training objectives still require attention.
Errors remain that will need to be addressed over the upcoming Six Nations break ahead of a crucial away fixture against Cumbernauld on February 28 - a match that is likely to have significant implications for the final podium positions in the league.
