The man, who does not want to be named, won £1,000,000 after his EuroMillions ticket was selected in the UK Millionaire Maker raffle on October 31.
The winner, who plays online, only entered after he and his wife missed a train and popped into a shop to buy a newspaper - remembering to put some lines on a ticket for a special 10 Millionaire Maker draw.
Keeping his identity top secret, the man said: “I’ve played the lottery for years but never thought it would be me winning this amount of money. When I checked my phone while it was charging, my wife thought I’d been electrocuted - I was in complete shock! A missed train has never turned out so well!.”
A dream honeymoon is now top of the list for him and his wife.
Andy Carter, Senior Winners’ Advisor at Allwyn, operator of The National Lottery, congratulated the Argyll and Bute winner, saying, “That missed train turned out to be incredibly fortunate. We’re thrilled they can now enjoy an extra special honeymoon. Congratulations!”
Each week, players help generate around £32M for National Lottery-funded projects. With over £52BN raised for Good Causes since launch, this funds hundreds of projects in every postcode area across the UK. From supporting the arts and sport sectors, to empowering local community groups and preserving iconic British landmarks, players’ participation makes a difference every single day.
Although the name of the winner has not been revealed, The Oban Times can confirm it is not the town’s ’luckiest’ man Calum MacLellan whose winning streak we featured in January.
The 33-year-old distillery worker who made our headlines after winning his second dream car on top of winning £15,000 in a half-time prize draw at Celtic Park - all in the space of less than a decade - told The Oban Times this week: "It definitely wasn’t me winning the Euromillions. I’m gutted."
