The Met Office has issued an amber warning for most of Scotland during Storm Floris today, with the West Coast among the worst affected areas.
The warning for strong winds is in place from 10am until 10pm today, with a yellow warning covering the northern half of the UK remaining in place until Monday midnight.
Storm Floris is forecast to be an unseasonably disruptive storm bringing very strong winds and some heavy rain across the northern half of the UK, it is the first named storm since Storm Eowyn in January.
The west coast is set to see the worst of the gusts, according to a Chief Meteorologist at the Met Office, Dan Suri,
He said: “Much of Scotland is likely to see gusts of 50-70mph with more than 80mph on some exposed coasts, hills and bridges.
"Western coastal areas will see the highest gusts late morning, with the strongest winds transferring to northeastern Scotland by late afternoon. Across the wider Yellow warning area, many inland areas are likely to see gusts of 40-50mph, with 60mph likely at higher elevations and around some exposed coasts.”
"Extra caution should be taken by all road users. plan ahead and avoid unnecessary travel," warned Police Scotland.
"Consider delaying ravel until conditions improve. If you are travelling on roads, prepare yourself and your vehicle for the conditions."
Whilst winds are the main, and most widespread hazard associated with Storm Floris, relatively high rainfall accumulations will build-up over part of north and west of Scotland where 20-30mm of rain will fall quite widely with upwards of 40-60mm over some hills and mountains.
It is recommended that unnecessary travel be avoided today
Every CalMac ferry service is either disrupted or outright cancelled as a result.
