Kintyre Food Bank will be able to replace current equipment with more economical and lower emission items thanks to a £1,426 donation from airline Loganair’s GreenSkies Community Fund.
The number of people needing to use the food bank has doubled to more than 100 in the last year, while the level of donations has decreased.
The cost-of-living crisis is believed to be contributing to the rise in the need for the food bank’s services, with more people making savings reducing in-shop donations.
Kintyre Food Bank is proud of its green initiatives to date, including avoiding single-use plastic whenever possible, re-using bags and encouraging clients to bring their own.
It would now like to replace an older fridge freezer and room heater with more energy efficient models, something that may be possible thanks to the GreenSkies Community Fund.
The groundbreaking initiative run by Loganair, the airline that operates flights to and from Campbeltown Airport, supports charities, community groups and small businesses across the UK to reach their sustainability goals.
Loganair received nearly 250 applications for the latest round of funding and has revealed it will distribute funds to seven projects, including Kintyre Food Bank.
Charity chairperson Mary Anne Stewart said: “Kintyre Food Bank is delighted to receive this GreenSkies funding from Loganair.
“This will enable the food bank to save money on running costs so that it can fund food for the people who need to use it and by being able to buy a new energy-efficient fridge freezer and a heater for the premises, which will help reduce energy waste.”
Luke Lovegrove, chief commercial officer at Loganair, said: “The pressures on community food banks are ever increasing and we were blown away to see an operation like Kintyre Food Bank actively seeking to improve its energy efficiency and greener initiatives in every process amidst such challenging times.
“Loganair sits at the forefront of pushing for new technologies in the aviation industry which will lessen the environmental impact of flying and support our goal of reaching net zero by 2040.
“It is important to us to reach this goal as an airline and to support the communities we serve to see them achieve their sustainability goals.”
The GreenSkies Community Fund is part of Loganair’s environmental GreenSkies programme, launched in July 2021, which includes measures ranging from carbon offsetting to investing in future flight technologies to help achieve an ambitious target of becoming net zero by 2040.
To date, Loganair has invested more than £80,000 in community renewable projects through its GreenSkies Community Fund.
