While Nessie may (or may not!) roam the dark waters from loch to loch via the Caledonian Canal, today’s travellers often follow the 73-mile Great Glen Way. This long-distance trail connects Fort William and Inverness along a network of canal towpaths, forest trails, and former railway lines. Whether you’re walking or cycling, it’s a stunning and memorable way to experience the Highlands.
Starting at the lively town of Fort William, the route soon transitions into the peaceful Glen Nevis, nestled beneath Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain. The glen’s steep slopes and high rainfall feed a rich array of waterfalls, making it one of Scotland’s top spots to see these natural wonders. Hikers will also find ample opportunity for adventure, with a range of Munros and Corbetts to conquer.
Just a short drive north lies Spean Bridge, a village with a powerful wartime legacy. Thousands of commandos trained here during World War II, and the striking Commando Memorial, set on a hillside nearby, stands as a poignant tribute to their service.
The Caledonian Canal, a 60-mile engineering marvel linking natural lochs with man-made sections, brings life and connectivity to the Great Glen. One of its highlights is Fort Augustus, at the midpoint of the Glen, where Loch Ness meets the canal. Here you’ll find the refurbished Caledonian Canal Visitor Centre, the engaging Clansman Centre, themed shops, and eateries – making it a popular stop for both outdoor enthusiasts and Nessie hunters.
Of course, Loch Ness remains the star of the show. This vast, deep loch is shrouded in mystery and myth. Take a cruise from Fort Augustus or simply scan the waves from the atmospheric ruins of Urquhart Castle, perched on the loch’s edge.
Venture into the nearby glens to find further beauty: Glen Urquhart, home to the tranquil Craigmonie Woodland, leads down to the village of Drumnadrochit, while Glen Moriston offers cascading waterfalls and a haven for birdlife.
Whether you’re walking the Great Glen Way, marvelling at the engineering of the canal, or keeping your eyes peeled for signs of Nessie, the Great Glen is a place where legend meets landscape — and adventure is never far away.
