The Majestic Line is a boutique Scottish cruise company offering exceptional small-ship cruises along Scotland’s stunning west coast and the Hebrides.
Since its inception in 2004, The Majestic Line has focused on creating intimate and immersive travel experiences, allowing guests to explore some of Scotland’s most scenic and remote areas. By repurposing traditional fishing vessels into comfortable cruise ships, the company offers a unique and eco friendly way to discover the unspoiled beauty of Scotland’s coastline.
A Bit of History
The company was born out of a vision to provide visitors with access to Scotland’s hidden gems, places often inaccessible to larger vessels. The Majestic Line initially started with just two vessels, The Glen Massan and The Glen Tarsan, both refurbished wooden fishing boats. These small ships retained their rustic charm while being equipped with modern amenities for a comfortable onboard experience. Over the years, the fleet expanded to include two purpose-built steel vessels, the Glen Etive and the Glen Shiel, designed specifically for cruising in style while minimizing environmental impact.
In 2024, The Majestic Line was acquired by Craig of Campbeltown Ltd, a well established family business from the west of Scotland, with a long history of providing high-quality transport and tourism services. This acquisition has further strengthened The Majestic Line’s operations, ensuring its continued growth while maintaining its unique, small-scale cruising experience. The company’s name, “The Majestic Line,” is inspired by the fictional cruise line mentioned in Neil Munro’s famous Para Handy stories, set on a Clyde puffer boat. The scene makes note that Majestic Line boats can be recognised by their golden funnels, in another detail that has carried through to the line’s real-life iteration.
The Ultimate Scottish Cruise Experience
The Majestic Line offers an unparalleled way to explore Scotland’s rugged coastline, serene sea lochs, and enchanting islands. With a maximum of 12 passengers per vessel, cruises are small-scale and highly personal, creating a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
Meals are a highlight of the trip, with chefs sourcing fresh, local produce to create delicious dishes that showcase Scotland’s exceptional culinary heritage. Guests are treated to hearty breakfasts, light lunches, and sumptuous three course dinners paired with a selection of wines and Scottish whiskies. Itineraries typically include visits to secluded anchorages, uninhabited islands, and historic sites. Activities such as wildlife watching, beach walks, and exploring quaint coastal villages are guest-favourites. Whether you’re keen to spot seals, puffins, and golden eagles, learn about ancient local communities, or simply want to unwind amidst awe-inspiring scenery, there’s something for everyone.
Popular Itineraries
The line’s shortest cruise, “A Taste of the Hebrides,” allows guests to explore iconic destinations such as Mull, Iona, and Staffa on a three-night stay, ideal for visitors who want to witness Scotland’s dramatic coastline and enjoy The Majestic Line’s exclusive cruising experience on a smaller budget.
For the more adventurous, “Outer Hebrides and St Kilda” will be the obvious choice. This extended 10-night cruise will take you to the northern islands of Barra, Harris, and Lewis and along their white-sand beaches and rugged cliffs. Even further removed into the Atlantic Ocean, St Kilda is unparalleled in its wilderness. The remote archipelago and its striking sea stacks haven’t had human inhabitants since 1930, but they are the home of almost one million seabirds.
Many first-time visitors to Scotland will want to see the legendary Loch Ness. Why not cruise it, on the “Loch Ness and the Caledonian Canal” 6-night cruise, where you will encounter other iconic Scottish destinations, such as Neptune’s Staircase, Telford’s engineering marvel; Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in the British Isles; or the ever-popular Fort William.
Those wanting to see a different side of Scotland than its West Coast will be taken with “Orkney: A Voyage Through Time,”a 6-night cruise through the UNESCO World Heritage Site archipelago. The 70 islands are best navigated on a small cruise ship and boast diverse landscapes and wildlife, world renowned produce and some of the best-preserved Neolithic settlements.
Spruced for Spring
After acquiring The Majestic Line, Craig of Campbeltown decided to invest in its 4-vessel fleet with an ambitious refurbishment project. The renovations have been respectful of the line’s traditional character, while heightening the luxury with updated fixtures, furniture and comfortable carpeting and banqueting, upholstered by a small team in Inverness. Leaning into its strength in offering personalised experiences, each cabin now has its own colour palette and is named after a Scottish bird on the Glen Etive and Glen Shiel, and after a Scottish island on the Glen Massan and Glen Tarsan. With a view to longevity, the project will be ongoing, but guests in the 2025 season will be the first to experience these state-of-the-art improvements.
Why Choose The Majestic Line?
The Majestic Line prides itself on delivering an intimate and authentic cruising experience that larger ships simply cannot match. By anchoring in secluded spots and tailoring itineraries to guests’ interests, the cruises feel more like a private expedition than a commercial tour. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply seeking a tranquil escape, these cruises offer something truly special.
Additionally, the small group size fosters a strong sense of camaraderie among passengers and crew, making every trip feel like a journey with friends. The expert crew members, including knowledgeable skippers and wildlife guides, ensure that guests get the most out of their time at sea.
Booking Your Cruise
The full calendar of available cruises for 2025 and 2026 can be viewed on their official website, where you can also make reservations. The Majestic Line’s cruises are incredibly popular, so early booking is strongly recommended.
Cruises in April, and October 2025 are available at a 10% discount, offering an opportunity to experience Scotland’s changing seasons at a reduced cost.
Some cabins are offered without a single supplement, making these cruises an attractive option for solo travellers. However, these cabins are limited and tend to book up quickly.
