Arran Junior Shinty Club’s second shinty tournament held at Auchrannie Sports Hall attracted over 30 participants from across the island.
The sport was relatively obscure on Arran prior to it being introduced at Fèis Arainn which stimulated some interest and resulted in the junior club being formed.
The club now offers children regular shinty training sessions and expert tuition and the opportunity to compete against other players.
Since its introduction, interest in the sport has grown rapidly and a number of players are demonstrating skills which may allow for an Arran team to be formed.
If sufficient numbers join, an Arran team could hone their skills even further by competing with other junior teams on the mainland.
Participants at this year’s tournament were divided into five teams – all named after well-known Scottish shinty teams: Kyles, Oban, Skye, Kingussie and Strathglass.
Play was fast-paced and the competition between players was fierce, however, the results saw Kingussie taking the first place trophy with Skye and Strathglass coming in second and third place respectively.
Gillian Frame of Arran Junior Shinty Club congratulated all of the players and said that she was delighted with the turnout and support from families.
She said: “Thank you to coach Bobby Crowe, referee Mattie Jones and all the parent helpers on the day. Thanks too to Auchrannie which provided an excellent venue for the event and looked after everyone really well”.
The Arran Junior Shinty Club meets every Monday, between 4.45pm and 5.45pm, at Arran High School and all P4 to S1 pupils on Arran are invited to join the group.
