Part performance, part ceilidh; BLOOM is a journey from Japan to Scotland featuring step dance, video projection and live music.
The show tours across Argyll this August to venues including An Tobar, the Rockfield Centre and Tayvallich Community Hall.
This new dance production combines percussive dance, poetic video projections and ceilidh culture to tell the personal story of Tokyo-born dancer Kae Sakurai as she carves out a new home in Scotland.
Beginning with a homage to the city of Glasgow, where she lives now, and ending with a tribute to the enduring image of Japan, the cherry blossom, the sakura, the origin of her family name.
The show will be followed by a fun-filled evening of Ceilidh dancing where a friendly caller will guide you through the steps, ensuring everyone feels confident and ready to dance.
Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or a complete beginner, BLOOM welcomes everyone, including wheelchair and mobility aid users.
The production has been supported by the National Lottery through Creative Scotland’s prestigious Touring Fund for Theatre and Dance enabling the company to bring their performances to audiences across Scotland in 2025 and 2026.
Kae Sakurai said: “From Japan to Scotland, the journey unfolds in dance and projected light. BLOOM celebrates where we come from and where we’re going.
"This year I celebrate my 20th year in Scotland. BLOOM is the story of my new life in Scotland. I have made many friends and have had many collaborations in dance and music since I have moved.
"Although BLOOM is a solo show, I am bringing all my collaborators with me via video projection and music. I love playing music for people to dance to. I am very excited to play for the audience in the second half of the night.”
Monika Smekot, video designer says: “Designing projections for BLOOM was full of creativity and joy. I loved exploring how to capture rhythm, footwork, and shifting perspectives — from camera to stage — and playing with scale and mood.
"For me, projections are a depiction of delicate feelings that orbits between the audience and performer.”
Vanessa Boyd, Interim Head of Dance at Creative Scotland said: “This vibrant production, supported through Creative Scotland’s Touring Fund for Theatre and Dance and made possible via National Lottery funding brings together communities, cultures and artforms in a powerful celebration of identity and belonging.
"We’re excited to see audiences across Argyll connect with Kae Sakurai’s inspiring story and the inclusive spirit at the heart of the show. BLOOM isn’t just a performance, it’s an invitation to come together, dance, and celebrate the joy of community.”
