More than 100 runners will descend on Arran this weekend for Queen’s Park Athletics Club’s Goatfell Race.
The challenging 15.6 kilometres (9.6 miles) race from Ormidale Park up to the 874 metres (2,867 feet) summit of Goatfell and back is a popular fixture in the Scottish Athletics calendar.
Open to those over 18, the race is a demanding challenge, even for experienced runners, with a 200-runner limit and steep, technical terrain.
Murray Strain hold the course record for males. He finished in a time of one hour, 12 minutes and 11 seconds in 2017. The female record stands at one hour, 26 minutes and 21 seconds. It was set by Angela Mudge in 2001.
The race often attracts a strong local contingent and prizes are awarded to winners in the various age categories. Prizes are also awarded to the first local man and woman.
Last year’s Goatfell Race was held in hot conditions. The local winners were: first local male, Ewan McKinnon, and the first local female was Kirstie Smith.
