Work to install specially designed public art, new seating and improved lighting has begun at Tarbert’s waterfront.
The upgrades will run the length of the harbour wall from the Fish Quay to the Co-op corner, and form part of the Earra Gael Public Realm project.
Monday January 19 saw the start of the second phase of the development, with initial improvements already completed, including new timber decking at the harbour, handrails and new non-slip surfaces.
The project is being led by Tarbert Harbour Authority, with local building company Duncan McGregor contracted to carry out the streetscaping work.
“Tarbert Harbour Authority is proud to be delivering these public realm improvements,” senior port manager Darren Mair told the Advertiser. “This project represents an important milestone in the harbour’s ongoing commitment to supporting the local community and aligns with our strategic aim to contribute positively to village life.
“The improvements will create a space that residents, businesses, and visitors can enjoy throughout the year and will provide street furniture to support disabled access.”
The project has been funded via grants from Argyll and Bute Council and from the harbour’s own financial reserves. The new seating and bins were donated to the project by Tarbert and Skipness Community Trust.
“We extend our sincere thanks to all funders, partners, and contractors for their role in bringing this project to fruition, and to the community for its continued support,” Darren added.
The project includes a bespoke sculpture designed by Mid Argyll artist Melanie Chmielewska.

“The sculpture will be installed adjacent to the Earra Gael, adding a distinctive cultural feature to the Harbour Front,” Darren explained. “The artwork has been created specifically for this location and reflects the identity and heritage of the community.”
