A new defibrillator has been fitted on the Crinan Canal in Ardrishaig, with a second device planned to ensure life-saving support is available along the waterway.
Installed by Scottish Canals at the start of January, the defibrillator at Lock 2 will provide residents and visitors in the area with faster access to vital care in a medical emergency.
After a concern was raised locally that the lock could delay access in an emergency, Scottish Canals confirmed it will soon be removed.
A spokesperson said: “We are encouraged to hear that the local community have already spotted this life saving equipment and recognised our pro-active efforts in installing a tool that can save lives and protect our community.
“We are currently waiting on additional materials to be added to the box to ensure that this defibrillator is fully operational, and once these have been installed, the lock will be removed.
“We undertake a risk assessment of all locations where defibrillators have been installed, and wherever possible, ensure that defibrillators remain fully accessible for use without the need for unlocking either directly or through contact with emergency services.
“We plan on installing another defibrillator elsewhere on the canal and are currently in discussions on where its location will be to ensure we cover as much ground as possible and will share those details as soon as they become available.
“In the event of a medical emergency we would always advise anyone to call 999 in the first instance.”
