Perched overlooking the picturesque Tarbert harbour, the Red Herring Restaurant invites diners to cast off from the everyday and embark on a culinary adventure that celebrates Argyll’s deep maritime history. At the heart of the village’s newest eatery is Jamie McMillan along with his business partners Alina (front of house) and Mihail (head chef) who are a married couple originating from Moldova.
The Red Herring opened in July 2024 and has since undergone a major refurbishment. The restaurant closed at the end of 2024 to allow the refurbishment to take place. It has now expanded into what was previously the Loch Fyne Fish Bar, with the capacity to accommodate 40 tables while also providing an efficient takeaway service. The walls are adorned with black & white photos showcasing Jamie’s family of Herring fishermen in
the 1980’s.
Jamie is delighted with their new-found success since opening at Easter. He tells us ‘It has been absolutely fantastic, we are fully booked every night’
‘Great food starts with the finest ingredients!’ declared Head Chef Mihail. With over 15 years of experience, he is a master of seafood, expertly blending traditional techniques with innovative twists. From succulent lobster and hearty fish dishes to perfectly golden calamari and seafood linguine, Chef Mihail’s creations let the natural, fresh flavours of the sea shine through.
Sourcing is key at the RedHerring. Jamie prides himself on obtaining only the freshest seafood directly from local suppliers and producers, which in turn, supports the community and ensures the highest quality. Front of House is expertly curated by Alina, with a high attention to detail - from beautiful table settings to ensuring customers are very well looked after….and leave happy.
Jamie, Alina and Mihail are passionate about supporting the local fishermen. Whether it’s Loch Duart salmon, west coast oysters, langoustines and hand dived scallops from Loch Fyne – from pier to plate it just doesn’t get any fresher than this. Not forgetting the vegetarians, vegans, meat lovers and wee ones; there are options for every taste and preference, including tempting desserts like traditional puddings, handmade ice creams and their famously indulgent affogato with Arran Gold Cream Liqueur.
Enjoy lunch or dinner from 12nonn to 10pm, seven days a week, and discover why Argyll locals and visitors alike are hooked on the Red Herring Restaurant. Booking for dinner is recommended.
