Motorists across Oban and the wider rural area are being warned not to leave their MOT until the last minute after garages report a growing number of vehicles being booked in only after their certificate has expired.
In communities where many drivers rely heavily on their cars for work, school runs and essential trips, missing an MOT can have serious consequences, both legally and in terms of road safety.
Local mechanics say appointment slots can be limited in smaller towns, meaning drivers who delay booking may find themselves either off the road unexpectedly or taking the risk of driving illegally.
With more than a quarter of vehicles typically failing their MOT, a significant number of cars travelling on rural roads could potentially be unroadworthy.
A spokesperson for a local garage said:
“In rural areas like ours, people depend on their cars far more than in cities, so it can be tempting to keep driving if the MOT has run out. But that’s a real risk. Booking early means you stay legal and gives time to fix any problems before they become dangerous, especially on longer country journeys.”
Drivers are reminded that an MOT can be carried out up to a month (minus a day) before the expiry date without changing the renewal anniversary. Booking ahead can help avoid last-minute stress, fines of up to £1,000, and the danger of driving a vehicle which may not be safe.
