A community-led bid to breathe new life into Campbeltown town centre is inviting the public to come along, ask questions and help shape what happens next.
Diamond Vault Community Benefit Society (CBS) will host an open day at Campbeltown Town Hall on Thursday, April 30, from 2pm to 8pm – and organisers are keen to see as many local people through the doors as possible.
The event will give residents, businesses, trades and community groups the chance to find out exactly what the project is about, how it plans to operate, and crucially, how they can get involved.
At the heart of the initiative is a plan to bring empty and deteriorating buildings back into use.
Diamond Vault CBS aims to acquire and safeguard properties in community ownership, while its partner organisation, Kintyre Community Regeneration CIC, will handle the day-to-day work of refurbishing, managing and renting them out.
Jason McCallum, one of the team behind the project, said the open day is about more than just explaining the model – it’s about listening.
“This is a chance for people to come in, have a chat, ask anything at all and tell us what they want to see for the future of the town centre,” he said. “We want this to be shaped by the community.”
Throughout the afternoon and evening, visitors will be able to meet board members, learn about community shares, and get practical advice on everything from investing in the project to taking on empty premises.
Isla McCulloch, Democratic Finance development officer, will be on hand throughout the day to explain how community shares work and how to get involved, with presentations at 3pm and 6pm.
Also attending will be Daniel MacIntyre, empty business property officer for Argyll and Bute Council, offering guidance for those interested in starting a business in vacant units, along with community development officer Antonia Baird.
Tea and coffee will be available, and there will be support on the day for anyone who wants to sign up as a member.
Organisers say whether people are simply curious, keen to invest, or have ideas to share, everyone is welcome to go along and help shape Campbeltown’s future.
