A poignant tribute was made this week to two popular characters amid a huge fundraising effort.
A Mid Argyll team of big-hearted cyclists is taking on a 950-mile challenge in support of the charity founded before the death from motor neuron disease (MND) of Scottish rugby legend Doddie Weir.
And on Monday March 2 the team came to Lochgilphead to honour one of the My Name’5 Doddie foundation’s most ardent supporters.
Joe McGhee, an employee at Midton in Kilmory industrial estate, every year led the charge to recruit his colleagues at the acrylic manufacturer to participate in the annual Doddie Aid Challenge.
Sadly, Joe passed away last year from cancer, but his colleagues are more determined than ever to throw their weight behind the cause that meant so much to him.
This determination resulted in an impressive tally of miles being clocked up by the Midton staff and on Monday Team Full Boar, the Mid Argyll cyclists that are about to set off from Dunadd to Dublin to raise money for MND research and support in memory of Doddie, popped in to present the staff with the Kilmory Crown in Joe’s memory.
“We’ve been taking part in the Doddie Aid challenge since it began,” Midton director Graham Ramsay told the Advertiser. “The Kilmory Crown is a friendly league between businesses on the industrial estate.
“Joe used to organise it each year and bring Team Midton together to take on Macleods.
“This year, we did it in Joe’s memory, as we tragically lost him to cancer last year.
“Having Team Full Boar come to be a part of Joe’s trophy presentation meant a lot. It was a very fitting tribute to Joe – exactly the kind of moment Joe would have loved.”
Midton is one of the main sponsors supporting the Mid Argyll cyclists in their epic bid to raise as much for MND as possible.
John Anderson, Stephen Whiston, Colin MacFarlane, Greig MacLeod, Robbie Semple, David Carey and Steve Romans will cycle from Dunadd on March 9 to Melrose to join up with 40 other teams taking part in the challenge.
