A six-week project to designed to transform how residents and visitors move through the heart of Campbeltown began on Kinloch Road this week.
The improvements, delivered by BEAR Scotland on behalf of Transport Scotland, aim to make walking, wheeling and cycling safer and more accessible.
Key features of the project include the installation of two new signal-controlled pedestrian crossings located adjacent to The Royal Hotel and Aqualibrium Leisure Centre.
In addition to the new crossings, crews are working to widen existing footpaths and will eventually resurface the A83 carriageway with fresh road markings.
These upgrades align with the Scottish Government’s broader goal of making active travel the preferred choice for everyday local journeys.
To keep the workforce and the public safe, lane closures and temporary traffic lights will be in place between 8am and 6pm until the project is expected to conclude on Friday, April 10. However, to minimise disruption for evening commuters, the lights will be removed outside of working hours whenever it is safe to do so.
While sections of the north and south footpaths will be closed during the works, safe alternative routes for pedestrians will be maintained. Local bus services and emergency vehicle access will continue as normal throughout the duration of the works.
Gerard Kelly, BEAR Scotland’s North West region active travel manager, emphasised that the works are part of an “ongoing commitment to improve safety, quality, and comfort for vulnerable road users”.
He added: “The traffic management is essential to keep roadworkers, motorists, pedestrians and cyclists safe during this project, however our teams will carry out these works with safety as our top priority.
“We encourage road users to plan their journey in advance by checking the Traffic Scotland website for up-to-date traffic information and allow some extra time to reach their destination.
“We thank the local community and road users for their patience while we complete the improvements.”
