Campbeltown Bowling Club’s annual R Leishman Memorial Rinks competition was held on the Stronvaar green on Saturday, May 2.
An entry of 24 teams competed throughout the day in four sections.
The competition was paused in the morning to allow members to pay their respects to one of the club’s longest-serving members, Elizabeth Nicholson.
When play resumed, entertaining section games eventually saw the teams of Gavin McLachlan Jnr, Johnnie McLean, Jimmy Anderson and Oban’s Graham Melvin qualify for the semi-finals.
Jimmy’s team started strongly against Johnnie’s rink, picking up an early count of four to build a lead that proved enough to secure a place in the final.
Meanwhile, Gavin’s team built a two-shot advantage over Graham’s side with a couple of ends remaining. A trail of the jack by Lee Allen on the second-last end proved pivotal, giving Gavin’s rink the cushion needed to progress.
The final saw Gavin’s team take an early three-shot lead, but Jimmy’s rink battled back. With only one shot separating the teams and two ends remaining, an important last bowl by Gavin earned his side a double and a three-shot advantage going into the final end.
Despite Jimmy’s best efforts, it proved enough to see Gavin’s team take this year’s title.
President Lorraine Brodie then proceeded with the prizegiving, thanking the committee members and helpers who worked to make the day a success.
She gave special mention to the visiting teams from Argyll, Tarbert, Lochgilphead, Oban, Ayrshire and Wellcroft Bowling Clubs for their support, along with the home club teams.
Finally, she thanked the Leishman family for their continued excellent sponsorship and support of the competition, which is greatly appreciated.
Lorraine then invited Allison Williamson to present the trophy and prizes to the winners on behalf of the family, bringing an excellent day for the club to a close.
