Uddingston RFC 52 Mid Argyll RFC 24
West Region - Division 2
Mid Argyll RFC senior men’s team were on their travels again on February 28 in the Arnold Clark West Region League Division 2 (Men’s).
This time Uddingston RFC were the hosts with Mid Argyll hoping to complete a double over the Glasgow men this season. Expectations were high and a decent squad of 19 had committed to make the journey.
The game began with Uddingston kicking off, Captain Murray MacDonald caught and returned the ball, but Robbie MacTavish was offside and Uddingston had a quick penalty. From here the home team built up the pressure and it wasn’t long before they went over for the first try of the afternoon.
Uddingston then scored two unanswered converted tries before the Boars’ loose head prop Callum Murray got the visitors on the score sheet.
Encouraged by this score it wasn’t long before Ben Rusden crossed for the Boars’ second. This time Dougie Ritchie added the conversion, and the fight back was on.
The fight back was short lived. Uddingston added another 12 points before the break and the half finished 31 – 12.

The second half started positive for Mid Argyll, but they were struggling to convert any serious chances. Uddingston took advantage of this and soon had another try on the board. This led to another two without reply and things were looking grim for the Boars.
The very narrow pitch was making it frustrating for the back three of Liam Long, Alex Smith and Innes Paterson with no real space to run at the opposition. The home team used this to their advantage well and kept the ball in the forwards to bulldoze through.
A couple of injuries meant a change in positioning. James Campbell replaced Jason Hammond, Fionn Doherty made his long-awaited return from injury when Liam Wagstaff had to leave the pitch with a cut eye, then when Elliot Lindsay limped off, Vinnie Buckley moved into scrum half and MacDonald moved into fly half.
Neill Malcolm added some weight and physicality into the centres and Brandon Clements took his place in the second row. Lucus Gritten finished off the changes when he replaced Smith on the wing.
The changes seemed to breathe a bit of life into the team and to celebrate his return to action Doherty was next over scoring out wide. No extras from Ritchie this time but it wasn’t long before he had another go at the sticks. Clement crossed close to the posts for his first senior try and this time Ritchie hit the mark.
This was how the game finished with the final score 52-24. There were some outstanding performances throughout the team from Daniel Doherty and Paterson, but the Fyne Ales Player of the Match for Mid Argyll was Matthew Peden.
There is now a break in fixtures while the Six Nations resumes on Saturday March 7, so the Boars next game is against Cumbernauld RFC at the ropework park on Saturday March 21, KO 3pm.
