Mull Rally’s 2025 Clerk of the Course Colin Harkness has won Motorsport UK’s 2025 Volunteer of the Year Award.
Colin was recognised for his tireless work in ensuring the Mull Rally was a success despite a rockfall forcing last minute changes.
He received the award on Saturday January 24 at Motorsport UK’s ’Night of Champions’ at the Royal Automobile Club on Pall Mall, London.
Colin has been a volunteer in motorsport for many years, and has been involved in marshalling and organising events at all levels in the sport.
He began rallying in the 90s, beginning as a co-driver before eventually making his way to the chairman of Dunfermline Car Club.
The now award winning Clerk raced in the Mull Rally 13 times himself, with 2025 his first time leading the event.
Under his stewardship, the 2025 Mull Rally was hailed as a rip-roaring success despite some significant challenges which could have easily derailed the event.
In just one week, the team, led by Colin, devised a completely new route in response to the closure of the B8035 which cut off the south of the island to contenders.
As a former competitor with experience of over 120 rallies, he has been a particular champion of grassroots club events and has taken this knowledge to supporting many events.
A leading figure in safety planning for multiple closed-road rallies in Scotland, Colin made significant changes to empower people so that he could discharge his responsibilities through delegation and support.
He was also Clerk for the Kingdom Stages and the Mach 1 Stages this year, and Deputy on the Crail Summer Stages, and the McRae Rally Challenge in 2025.
"I am humbled to have been nominated, let alone a winner,” said Harkness when told of his award. “As Clerk of the Course of the Beatson’s Building Supplies Mull Rally 2025, we certainly had our challenges.
"With a rockfall two months into the event, rendering a large part of the route inaccessible, a re-plan was required. With the support of an incredible team, we worked with the council, police, and the local community to regain most of the lost mileage, ensuring Mull retained the challenge it is famous for.
"I have been very fortunate since I got involved in rallying in the mid-nineties, having been part of many teams that have serviced, competed, marshalled, and run events. What I enjoy most is working as part of a team, all of us working together and enjoying the safe running of the sport we all love.
"Motorsport is a special family, and we all come together for these special moments. I want to inspire others to get involved in organising events."
Speaking after the ceremony Colin added: "It was a great honour to have been recognised for my volunteering last year. Having been part of eight events including the Beatson’s Building Supplies Mull Rally which had major challenges.
"I am only a small part of great teams that run all these events, this award could only happen with the support of every member of team."
