Auchindrain Museum is seeking new volunteers to join its visitor services team and help protect the historic township for future generations.
The Mid Argyll site is Scotland’s only surviving example of a Highland farming township, and narrowly avoided permanent closure before reopening to the public in July 2025.
The Auchindrain Trust has now launched a recruitment drive for enthusiastic individuals to welcome visitors, provide information about the township’s unique heritage, and support day-to-day operations.
Auchindrain is the sole remaining intact example of the traditional Highland runrig farming system, where families worked the land collectively for centuries.
Unlike reconstructed heritage sites, Auchindrain’s buildings, landscape, and stories are authentic, with the last residents only having departed in the 1960s.
"Auchindrain has survived for centuries because communities looked after it," said Jen Broadhurst, trustee of Auchindrain Township Museum Trust. "Now it’s our turn. We’re looking for people who want to be part of preserving something genuinely irreplaceable and sharing it with visitors from across Scotland and beyond."
Volunteers will receive full training covering the township’s history, buildings, farming practices, and the families who lived there. No prior experience or qualifications are required – just enthusiasm for heritage and a willingness to help others discover the unique site.
While the trust particularly welcomes volunteers from Mid Argyll, applications from further afield are also encouraged, and flexible arrangements can be made to suit individual availability.
"Every visitor who experiences Auchindrain leaves with a deeper understanding of Highland life and Scotland’s rural heritage," added Jen. "Our volunteers make that possible.
"They’re not just providing information – they’re connecting people to their heritage and ensuring this irreplaceable site has a sustainable future."
