He has represented Kyles Athletic with distinction over many years, but the Tighnabruaich side will go into the new shinty season without former Scotland captain Roddy Macdonald who has confirmed his retirement from senior shinty.
Roddy Macdonald said: "I just feel it’s time for me to go. I was the last one from my age group still hanging on last season when we managed to retain our Premiership status so I figured now was a good time to let the younger lads get on with it without grumpy old me moaning every week.
"I played most of last season with a hip injury which left me struggling to walk for a couple of days after every game. That meant I unable to train properly or even at all and it’s still not improved any so that’s another factor.
"I’m 38 in April so I’m getting on a bit and travelling every week from Glasgow is becoming a chore so that’s another reason I’m stepping back. If I’m back fit and the team is short, I’ll happily help but hopefully they’ll be just fine without me.
"I hope to help with the second team but I’m awaiting scan results on my hip. I’d like to help the young lads as that’s how it was when I first came through.
"Kyles means everything to me and I’ll still be around the club, helping where I can, including with the preseason fitness training."
Meantime, Kyles Athletic have started the second week of a special fundraiser for Children’s Hospices Across Scotland (CHAS), a charity which helps children with life- shortening conditions and their families make precious memories.
The Kyles Athletic players will clock up over 2,300 miles over the course of the coming weeks with the hope of raising £1 per mile.
The exercise forms part of the Tighnabruaich side’s preseason training and matches the total distance the club travels to away games at each of the nine Mowi Premiership grounds over the course of a season.
The players will complete journeys from Tighnabruaich and back as a collective and the miles can be accumulated through cycling, running, rowing, walking and swimming.
The money is being raised in memory of Callie-Rose Limbert, sister to youth player Struan Limbert and niece to junior team member Cairn Limbert, captain of their 2021 Bullough Cup winning side.
Callie-Rose had a life-limiting condition, but nothing could lessen the love her family and the community felt for her. For them, Robin House Children’s Hospice and their wonderful staff became a place of safety, gentleness and understanding during the most difficult chapter of their lives, a place where they were supported, comforted, and understood.
Kyles Athletic Grant Profit added: “We covered 400-odd miles towards our 2,300 miles target during the first week and we’ve raised over £600 so far. We’ve set ourselves a squad target of 500 miles for the second week and that should ensure we’re on track to achieve our overall target before the start of the season.
"Anyone able to donate can do so at a JustGiving page listed on the club’s social media channels."
