A weekly round-up from all the shinty action in the south, featuring Oban Camanachd, Oban Celtic, and Inveraray.
South Shinty
Mowi Premiership
Fort William 0
Oban Camanachd 1
Oban Camanachd go third in the Mowi Premiership after beating Fort William 1-0 at An Aird.
The Fort fielded a strong side with Alexander Cameron, Craig MacDonald, Johnny Forster and Hamish Shaw making up their defence.
Arran Stephen, Ali MacRae, Struan Stephen and Mark Fraser were on the substitutes’ bench but Victor Smith remained out with a hamstring injury.
Oban Camanachd continued to be without Ross Macmillan whilst Malcolm Clark was also unavailable, and Ross Campbell has suffered an ankle ligaments injury.
Daniel Madej returned to the starting line-up, joining Gary McKerracher, Louie MacFarlane and Andy MacDonald in a solid defence.
Craig Macmillan, Logan Black, Joe MacVicar and Iain Duffy were held in reserve.
Oban started against the wind and after a pensive opening period from both sides, visiting keeper Cammy Sutherland had made the only save of note in the first half until the 41-minute mark when Fort keeper Paul MacKay did well to tip a Daniel MacVicar effort over the bar.
It looked as if the sides would go into the break scoreless until, just a couple of minutes later, Connor Howe played a one-two with Lewis Cameron before finishing well from a tight angle on the right to make it 1-0 at half-time.
The second half struggled to get going with very few chances on goal.
Fort William gave it ago as they angled for an equaliser, but the Oban defence dealt with everything that came their way.
Oban full back Gary McKerracher was the game’s standout player with Lachie Shaw best for the Fort.
Looking back on the game, Oban Camanachd assistant manager Iain MacMillan said: “It brought back memories of the fixture here last season when the Fort scored during stoppage time to earn a 1-1 draw.
"I feared that might happen again but to be fair to the boys, they defended strongly, kept calm and saw it out well.
"Our defence and midfield were good, but we were just lacking a wee bit up front.
"We were able to introduce Joe MacVicar in place of Scott Campbell midway through the second half whilst Craig Macmillan came on for the final 15 minutes for his first senior appearance of the season.
"I don’t think either side played to their maximum, but the sides drew twice in the league last season so we’re happy with the two points this time around.”
This weekend’s fixtures see Oban Camanachd, sponsored by TSL Contractors, play Inveraray at Mossfield in the first round of the Macaulay Cup.
The Oban side were beaten finalists last year, narrowly losing out 1-0 to Kingussie in the final.
Fort William travel to Caberfeidh in their first round tie.
The sides met at the same venue a fortnight ago in the WM Donald MacTavish Cup opening round when Cabers prevailed 2-1 so the Fort will be after revenge.
Meantime Oban Camanachd’s club’s second string, Lochside Rovers, return to action on Saturday when they welcome the Lochaber second team in the HIS Sutherland Cup second round.
Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup - First Round
Oban Celtic 7
Ardnamurchan 2
Oban Celtic put their name in the hat for the Tulloch Homes Camanachd Cup second round draw when they beat Ardnamurchan 7-2 at Mossfield.
Celtic started in determined fashion and quickly ran up a four-goal lead through Kieran Gallagher on 2 minutes, Gabriel Tidser on 8 minutes, William MacEwan on 12 minutes and another from Gabriel Tidser on 18 minutes.
Ardnamurchan talisman Alan Palmer was on target for the visitors on 42 minutes but, straight from the restart, Duncan MacEwan scored to give Celtic an unassailable 5-1 lead.
Scott Dempster added his name to the score on 61 minutes and although Alan Palmer got his second with 10 minutes to go, it was that man Gabriel Tidser, such an important figure for the Oban side, who completed his hat-trick with just 3 minutes remaining.
Looking back on the match, Oban Celtic co-manager Cammy Mccallum said: “With Ardnamurchan flying high at the top of South 1, we knew this could have been a tricky tie but luckily for us, this was probably the strongest squad we’ve manage to assemble this season; almost back to full strength.
"Up front, our forwards knocked the ball about nicely and with real confidence which was great to see.
"Gabriel Tidser was back to his old self after returning from injury, dropping some lovely balls into the forwards and also coming forward and scoring a brilliant hat-trick from centre with three magnificent strikes.
"We were well in command by half-time which gave us the opportunity to give the younger lads some good game time with Alfie Robertson, Calum Mackay and Alexander MacEwan all getting a good run out and Alexander was very unlucky not to score with an excellent strike from 25 yards which hit the junction of post and crossbar.
"We’re still waiting on Kyle MacFarlane to return from injury but hopefully we’ll see him back in the next couple of weeks.
This was a great morale booster and myself and Alex (Dunnings) were absolutely delighted for the boys who have had a tough start to the season.
"We have Aberdour next week in the Macaulay so hopefully we can repeat Saturday’s performance.
"I would like to wish Ardnamurchan all the best for the rest of the season.”
Oban Celtic are in cup action at Mossfield again on Saturday when they welcome Aberdour in the first round of the Macaulay Cup whilst Ardnamurchan don’t have a fixture.
Bute 0
Inveraray 4
Inveraray go through after beating Bute 4-0 in their 1.30pm throw up at The Meadows.
Bute had Scott Harvey free of suspension whilst Inveraray missed the banned Lewis Montgomery.
Ewan Donnan bagged a brace on 5 and 24 minutes, either side of a Ruaraidh Graham strike on 14 minutes to give the visitors a 3-0 advantage which they took into the break.
Coll MacKay completed the impressive win, scoring from the edge of the D on 77 minutes.
The only disappointment for Inveraray was Robert Wood picking up a nasty hand injury.
Bullough Cup - First Round Mowi South Division 1
