Fort William 0 Oban Camanachd 1
Oban Camanachd go third in the Mowi Premiership after beating Fort William at An Aird.
The Fort fielded a strong side with Alexander Cameron, Craig MacDonald, Johnny Forster and Hamish Shaw making up their defence. Arran Stephen, Ali MacRae, Struan Stephen and Mark Fraser were on the substitutes’ bench but Victor Smith remained out with a hamstring injury.
Oban started against the wind and after a pensive opening period from both sides, visiting keeper Cammy Sutherland had made the only save of note in the first half until the 41-minute mark when Fort keeper Paul MacKay did well to tip a Daniel MacVicar effort over the bar.
It looked as if the sides would go into the break scoreless until, just a couple of minutes later, Connor Howe played a one-two with Lewis Cameron before finishing well from a tight angle on the right to make it 1-0 at half-time.
The second half struggled to get going with very few chances on goal. Fort William gave it ago as they angled for an equaliser, but the Oban defence dealt with everything that came their way.
Oban full back Gary McKerracher was the game’s standout player with Lachie Shaw best for the Fort.
This weekend’s fixtures see Fort William travel to Caberfeidh in the first round of the Macaulay Cup. The sides met at the same venue a fortnight ago in the WM Donald MacTavish Cup opening round when Cabers prevailed 2-1 so the Fort will be after revenge.
Skye Camanachd 0 Lochaber 2
Lochaber recorded a solid win over Skye Camanachd at Pairc nan Laoch, Portree.
Skye had William MacKinnon and Ruaraidh MacLeod missing games with shoulder problems and Sam Macphee’s struggling with a hand injury. Martin Pringle took a blow to the hand against Kingussie the previous week and although he played on, it was later confirmed that he has a fractured knuckle. James Morrison completed his three-match suspension whilst Seonaidh Alex Macleod remained out.
Max Campbell and Jack Dignan were available again following suspension for Lochaber, but Ryan Johnstone was banned. Shaun Nicolson was amongst their injury absentees.
A goal in each half won it for the Spean Bridge men with Iain Fyfe finishing well on 34 minutes and Max Campbell beating keeper Ally MacDonald on 78 minutes.
The sides also played for the Thomas Ferguson Memorial Cup, remembering the Skye defender who passed away in 1971 aged just 23 following a road accident near Tyndrum.
The trophy was presented to Lochaber skipper Barry Macdonald by Thomas’s sister Margaret Piper.
Ross Gordon was awarded the Glasgow Mid Argyll Shield as Skye’s man of the match.
Lochaber manager Ally Ferguson said: "It was a good game, and our whole team played well.
"I felt we had by far the better spell in the first half and were worthy of our 1-0 lead at the break with good play up front finished off well by Iain Fyfe.
"It was a competitive game but we knew one goal may not be enough and especially on the Island, we knew Skye would come out strong in the second half.
"That proved to be the case as the second 45-minutes was a separate affair as Skye started very strongly, and our keeper had a couple of good stops as they pegged us back for big spells.
Our defence was strong, and young Joey Mackay was up for the task.
"We showed good hunger and desire and we got the result on the day I believe we deserved.
"We had young Joey Mackay, Ross Loughry and Cameron Loughry, along with Rocco Berardelli in the squad and they all played their part in a good game in which the two points were very important to us as we’ve come close in recent games but not taken anything from them.
"Max Campbell played up front to good effect whilst Gregor Cameron did well at the back alongside his fellow defenders. Martin Johnstone was strong in the middle of the park.
"All in all, it was a very good day for us."
Next up for Skye is a Macaulay Cup first round tie against Lovat at Balgate. Lochaber travel to play holders Kingussie at The Dell in the same competition.
