In a single year, more than 2,000 people in Argyll have turned to Argyll & Bute Citizens Advice for help with everything from heating their homes to understanding benefits entitlement. For over 20 years the service has been a cornerstone of support and vital source of free, independent advice for local people facing difficult circumstances.
Established in 2002, this registered charity now supports thousands of clients each year across the region.
A Lifeline for Local People
“ABCAB is a lifeline for our community, helping people heat their homes and feed their families,” says Jen Broadhurst, Bureau Manager. “We help clients improve their income, navigate benefits systems, and access urgent crisis support. We’re not just an advice service - we’re often the first place people turn when they have nowhere else to go,” adds Jen.
Operating from Lochgilphead, Helensburgh, and various outreach points, ABCAB’s staff and volunteers ensure no one is left struggling alone. In 2023/24, the Bureau assisted 2,032 clients - over seven people each working day - many from socially or economically disadvantaged backgrounds.
Tackling Rural Challenges
With over 3,000 local children living in relative poverty and high levels of fuel poverty, the region faces serious economic challenges. The “Rural Premium” means higher costs for food, transport, and energy, compounded by limited access to services and older, less efficient housing. ABCAB supports residents on issues ranging from debt and housing to employment and family matters, encouraging clients to share their full story for holistic, effective support.
Driving Positive Change
ABCAB’s work goes beyond advice. By documenting local experiences, they influence decision-makers at local and national levels. Recent research projects have explored the cost-of-living impact on unpaid carers and challenges for rural landlords, ensuring community voices are heard in policy development.
Community-Backed, Community-Focused
As a charity, ABCAB secures funding from a range of sources, preparing detailed applications in a competitive landscape. Flexible funding, including individual donations, plays a growing role in enabling swift responses to emerging needs and bridging gaps between grants.
“Regular monthly donations of even £5 or £10 make a measurable difference to our ability to help people in crisis,” says Libby Dobbie, Business Development Officer. Contributions support sustainable service delivery across the region.
A Window into Our Work: New Display at Lochgilphead coming soon
A striking new window display at ABCAB’s Lochgilphead office will illustrate the Bureau’s transformative role in the community.
“We wanted something informative and welcoming,” says Libby, “to remind people we’re here for everyone.” Featuring real client stories and key service areas - benefits, debt, housing, and energy - the display will highlight ABCAB’s charitable status and the community support that sustains it.
“We hope it sparks conversations about the importance of advice services,” adds Jen. “It’s about more than crisis support - it’s about empowerment.
Looking Ahead
As ABCAB plans for the future, it remains deeply connected to the community, with ambitions to expand outreach and develop new specialist services tailored to local needs.
“We understand the unique challenges of life in Argyll and Bute,” says Jen. “With continued community support, ABCAB will be here for the next 20 years - and beyond - to ensure no one in Argyll & Bute is left behind.
