The A815, which was closed near to the junction with the A83 following a landslide on Sunday evening, opened on Wednesday January 14 at 8.30am - but only for daylight hours.
Argyll and Bute Council, which is responsible for the road, said it would be open under traffic management and delays should be expected.
Work to remove the large boulders from the hillside was successfully completed on Tuesday but due to the remaining volume of debris, insufficient visibility overnight, and heavy rain forecast, the road will close again at 4pm.
The road will continue to re-open daily at 8.30am and close at 4pm until further notice, said a council statement.
These arrangements remain weather dependent.
The diversion route (A83 Rest and Be Thankful, B828 Glenmhor Road, B839 Hells Glen road and the A815 Cairndow to Strachur / Dunoon) remains in place.
However, vehicles over 7.5 tonnes are prohibited from using the diversion, and CCTV monitoring will be in operation.
“We recognise that these measures will impact on local businesses and road users; however, our first priority is to protect the safety of the travelling public,” said a council spokesperson.
The road was closed on Monday and Tuesday following the landslide on the A815 road to/from Dunoon just before the junction with the A83.
A specialist geotechnical inspection found a significant volume of loose debris and large boulders on the adjacent hillside.
