For most visitors, the gateway to Kintyre is Tarbert, a charming fishing port where colourful boats bob in the harbour, framed by cafés, quaint shops, and the striking silhouette of a church tower. Overlooking the town, the ivy-clad ruins of Tarbert Castle whisper tales of medieval Scotland, once a crucial stronghold for Robert the Bruce.









1.Distilleries
Campbeltown is home to three whisky distilleries – Springbank, Glen Scotia and Glengyle. All offer tours and tastings, and the Kintyre Gin distillery, on Torrisdale Castle Estate, is open to visitors and has a gin school and cafe.
2. Skipness Castle and Kilbrannan Chapel
A short drive from Tarbert, this 11th-century castle showcases a blend of architectural styles. There’s plenty to see inside, including views across the Kilbrannan Sound to Arran.
3. Golf
Machrihanish Golf Club is celebrated worldwide, and no golf enthusiast will want to miss a round on this links course, which boasts sea views and what is considered the country’s most spectacular opening hole.
4. Davaar Island
This tidal island is linked to the mainland at Campbeltown by a shingle causeway. It’s known for its lighthouse and caves, one of which contains a remarkable painting of Jesus on the cross.
5. Kintyre Way
This long-distance path takes a winding and beautiful route down the length of the Kintyre peninsula, from Tarbert to Machrihanish. You can do the whole challenge over several days, or pick a section and enjoy a stroll.
6. Boat Excursions
While there’s plenty to do on Kintyre itself, it’s also a great first step on an adventure further afield. Head to the lovely Isle of Gigha from Tayinloan, to Arran from Claonaig or further afield to Islay or Colonsay,from Kennacraig. You can also hop over to Northern Island with the Kintyre Express!
7. Tarbert Festivals
The fishing village of Tarbert may be small, but it’s big on festivals, and more seem to be added to the calendar each year. The seafood and music festivals are long-running favourites, but look out for activities as part of the Viking festival, Traditional Boat Festival, Scottish Series and Fair too.

8. Dunaverty Bay (Southend)
A crescent bay at the tip of the Kintyre peninsula, picturesque Dunaverty is a popular swimming spot near the striking Dunaverty Rock. Neighbouring Southend village is surrounded by dairy farmland and this area is steeped in history.
9. Mull of Kintyre
Forever associated with Paul McCartney’s song, this remote headland marks the tip of the Kintyre peninsula. The effort of reaching it is repaid with dramatic views towards Ireland - look out for dolphins.
10. Kintyre 66
The Kintyre 66 is a 66 mile loop around one of Scotland’s most scenic regions. You’ll pass castles, churches, beaches and woodland, with plenty of great places to stop and enjoy the views.
