Hurry on down to Calgary as Grit and Grace: Iona, a new exhibition by award-winning Tobermory artist David Page, is open right now.
Page’s newest work opened at Calgary Gallery on Saturday May 9 and runs until May 24, offering a fresh view of one of the west coast’s most recognisable islands.
Set within its woodland sculpture trail, Calgary Gallery showcases local and visiting artists and has become a hub for creativity on the island. This new collection focuses on Iona, drawing on its unique geology and cultural heritage.
Page works in large abstract acrylics, building up layers of paint and then pouring, scraping and reworking the surface.
Pippa Reade, Gallery Director, says: “David’s process is very physical. He builds up the surface and then works back into it, revealing earlier colours and marks, which gives the paintings a real sense of depth. As a former architect, Page has a strong eye for composition. There’s a strength to the work, but also a balance, which reflects what he’s found in Iona.”
This collection has grown from close observation of Iona’s past and present. The paintings include references to the island’s religious significance and to artists who have been inspired by it before. With a new colour palette and a strong focus on seascapes, this is a fresh body of work that remains recognisably Page’s.
Pippa adds: “Everyone is welcome to join us for the opening on Saturday, 9th May, from 5–7pm. It’s a great chance to see the full collection and meet David in the gallery.”
Admission is free for all visitors.
