Take a look around any high street, office or workshop just now and you’ll see it straight away—women are helping drive business forward in every corner of our communities.
From those starting out with a new idea to those leading well-established organisations, women are bringing a blend of clear thinking, creativity and people-first leadership that’s making a real impact. It’s not just about the bottom line - it’s about building workplaces where people feel supported, valued and able to thrive.
More and more, businesses are recognising the strength that comes from different perspectives. That shift is creating stronger teams, better ideas and more resilient organisations—and women are right at the centre of it.
Of course, the journey hasn’t always been straightforward. Many have had to overcome challenges along the way, showing real determination and resilience to succeed. In doing so, they’re not only building their own businesses and careers, but also opening doors for others to follow.
That’s why it’s so important to shine a light on women in business—celebrating success, sharing stories and inspiring the next generation to step forward with confidence.
The Oban Times caught up with five women in business—read on to hear their stories and celebrate local success.
Argyll Eye Care formerly Carol Lekalake Optometrist
Clinical expertise with a personal touch: The new face of your local opticians Helen McNicoll
For Helen, optometry became her chosen career straight from school, although the early stages were anything but easy. The course didn’t connect with her at first, and the idea of leaving during the first year felt very real, a point that, looking back, proved to be a turning moment rather than an end. Qualifying led her to a small independent practice in Guernsey, where her passion for patient care truly began to develop. Those years helped her build both her clinical skills and her confidence in connecting with people.
Conversation, understanding personal needs, and finding the best solution became central to her approach, ‘ I love chatting to people and really exploring what they need and how best to achieve that with glasses or contact lenses ‘ said Helen. A later qualification in independent prescribing further expanded her clinical role, allowing her to manage a broader range of eye conditions within the practice. Supporting people during vulnerable times remains one of the most fulfilling aspects of her work.
Recently taking over the Carol Lekalake practice marks an exciting new chapter for the entire family. Becoming a family-run business brings renewed energy and shared ambition, with plans to introduce additional professional services and new frame ranges.
Helping people select eyewear that enhances their confidence is something the team truly values. It’s a small yet meaningful way of helping someone feel good.

Amy Carmichael, Branch Manager at City Plumbing Oban
Born in Paisley and settled in Oban for nearly two decades, Amy Carmichael has built a strong career rooted in customer service and community. A mum of three, she balanced family life with professional ambition—joining City Plumbing in 2020 as Assistant Branch Manager while studying Business Management with the Open University. Her dedication quickly paid off, stepping into the role of Branch Manager and leading one of the area’s most trusted trade suppliers.
Amy credits the branch’s success to its close-knit team. “We’re small, but that’s our strength,” she explains. “We know our customers, we support local trades, and we take pride in going the extra mile.” That personal approach has helped build lasting relationships across the local plumbing and heating community.
A standout feature of the business is its thriving bathroom showroom, developed into one of the busiest of its kind in the UK. Offering competitive pricing without compromising on quality, the team provides expert guidance, including free 3D design services to help customers visualise their projects.
Looking ahead, Amy is focused on growth, innovation, and continued support for local installers. Clarity Safety Solutions: Trusted, Qualified, Local. Meet Claire Rizos
Claire moved to Oban in 2008, bringing with her a recently formed consultancy business, Clarity Safety Solutions Ltd. From small beginnings, the company now employs a second full time consultant, as well as an administrator, and a further part-time legionella risk assessor. She says, “When I first moved to the West Coast I focused on business publishing, and gained a reputation in my niche area, writing on the topic of health and safety. However, as word leaked out that I was here, the business reshaped into a more hands-on client focussed consultancy”.
Claire is a chartered health and safety professional and both she and colleague Ewan Chrystal are qualified and registered fire risk assessors. With their combined experience the team at Clarity Safety Solutions now covers fire safety, legionella risk, health and safety management, short term let licensing support, construction safety and more.
Customers include a mix of those who have access to advice and support throughout the year, and others who have a specific project in mind. Lately the company has been handling a surge in enquiries for fire risk assessments and help with applying for, or renewing, short term letting licences.

Growing Women in Business Through Apprenticeships with UHI Argyll.
Argyll and Bute Council has long championed the idea of “growing our own” talent, and supporting women to build successful careers locally is a key part of that commitment. Modern Apprenticeships delivered by UHI Argyll are helping make that ambition a reality by enabling
the organisation to upskill its existing workforce.
UHI Argyll student Abbie Wallace is a great example of this approach in action. Already employed as Personal Assistant to the Executive Director within the Council’s Development and Infrastructure Services directorate, Abbie recently completed her SCQF Level 6 Business and Administration qualification using the Modern Apprentice framework. The apprenticeship allowed her to gain valuable new skills while continuing in her role.
Throughout her qualification, Abbie was supported by her UHI Argyll assessor Jackie MacPherson, alongside her line manager Katie McKenzie. Katie says: “My experience working with UHI Argyll and Abbie’s college mentors has been excellent. They’ve been approachable, supportive and genuinely invested in helping Abbie progress through her qualification.”
For Abbie, the chance to gain a qualification while working has been transformative.
“The UHI Argyll mentors have always been there when I needed advice. Combining study with hands-on experience has helped me build confidence and really understand my role.”
Supporting women in the workplace is vital to developing the next generation of local talent. To find out more about Modern Apprenticeships with UHI Argyll,
