Scottish Surfing is hosting its flagship event, the national prone and stand up paddle board (SUP) championships, on Arran this May.
All of the races, including sprint and long distance categories for women and men, and technical categories for women, men and juniors (12-18 years), will take place in Brodick Bay on Saturday May 2.
The sprint event consists of a 100 metre paddle out from the beach, round a buoy and back. The long distance event will cover nine kilometres, while the technical race will involve navigating around a series of buoys, covering a total distance of three to five kilometres.
The event will attract paddlers hoping to make the Scottish team. First and second placed men and women in each category could go on to represent Scotland at the European Surf Association’s paddle board championships at Mellia, the Spanish city on the north coast of Africa, in October, and also the world championships, organised by International Surf Association, in November.
Among the contenders seeking to secure a place in the rankings will be Arran’s Glen Sloss who was ranked third in the European SUP league’s 40+ category last year.

Glen told the Banner: “The SUP community has been the most welcoming and encouraging group of people you could imagine. I’ve been lucky enough to have been part of the first ever Scottish team to compete at the International Surfing Association World SUP championships (2024) and would love to earn a place on the team again this year to represent my country.
“There are races all over the UK, Europe and beyond. I have been fortunate to be able to travel extensively and meet lovely people from all over the world. Stand up paddleboarding is such great exercise for body and mind. I encourage everyone to try it out and see what you think.”
The competition is open to anyone who wishes to enter. Organiser, Ally Findlay from Scottish Surfing, said that the competition is designed to be “everybody’s championships”. “Whatever your level, why not get involved? Put in an entry and see what it could lead to. Community, friendly competition and stunning conditions are what we are all about,” added Ally.
