Sean “Higgy” Higgins has received a huge amount of local support for his fundraising effort to run the Edinburgh Marathon next month.
More than 81 supporters on his JustGiving page at www.justgiving.com/page/sean-higgins-1 have already backed his efforts by contributing to his Arran Cancer Support (ArCaS) fundraiser that takes place on Sunday May 24.
The popular plumbing and heating specialist, who is also the man behind organising the Arran football league, will be running the marathon in memory of his mum Elaine Higgins who fought a difficult battle against breast cancer.
Higgy told the Banner why he chose to support ArCaS and why the challenge has a special meaning to him. He said: “I chose this marathon as the date it is taking place is also my mum’s birthday so it will have extra meaning to it. All donations raised will be going to ArCaS to support anyone else in similar situations on the island to support them through the difficult times.”
Originally setting a target of just £1,000, supporters, family and friends have already donated over £2,986 to Higgy’s fundraiser, exceeding the target by 298 per cent. Higgy hopes that people will continue to donate as the more money that is collected, the more assistance and support can be provided to those on Arran who are affected by cancer.
ArCaS is a dedicated cancer charity that has provided Arran residents with support for over 35 years. The charity provides free practical and emotional support, including caring and compassionate transport to mainland hospitals, counselling, and free ferry travel passes.
The charity raises funds through its well-supported shop in Brodick and from fundraising initiatives and donations. It also offers a Room to Talk Hub that provides a supportive space for people to meet.
