One of Scotland’s most treasured trails is turning 20 and everyone who has ever walked all or part of the 100-mile route is being invited to become part of the celebrations.
The team behind the Kintyre Way has launched a new interactive campaign, ‘Steps & Stories’, inviting walkers from near and far to share their favourite memories of the long-distance route.
Whether it was a charity trek, a memorial walk for someone special, a weekend adventure with friends or a magical wildlife encounter along the way, the Kintyre Way team wants to hear all about it.
From soaring eagles overhead to playful otters in Kintyre’s quiet coves, curious seals, graceful deer and even the flash of a rare red squirrel, sightings of Kintyre’s very own ‘big five’ have made many a journey unforgettable for visitors.
Now those moments can be shared and celebrated as part of this milestone year.
Louise Stanesby, interim chair for the Kintyre Way, said: “Steps & Stories really is the perfect way to mark our important anniversary. The Way means so much to so many people and for many different reasons – boosting physical health and mental wellbeing, enjoying adventures in the wilds and forging local connections.
“We’d love walkers, both local and international, to share their personal experiences and photos so we can celebrate together.”
Submissions will be featured on the Kintyre Way website, creating a living collection of memories that capture not only a walking route but a community story, told one step at a time.
For two decades, the Kintyre Way has welcomed walkers to explore the stunning length of the peninsula. Founded in 2006, the trail was created as a key visitor attraction and by its 10th anniversary had grown to 100 miles, stretching from Tarbert in the north all the way to Southend.
Today it loops back north to Machrihanish and proudly holds its title as one of Scotland’s ‘Great Trails’.
Now operating as a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO), it continues to thrive thanks to the dedication of its ‘Friends’, volunteers and trustees, along with the generous support of various local businesses.
“Through regular social events, it’s become not just a route on the map but a vital thread in Kintyre’s identity, helping visitors from near and far discover our landscape, heritage and warm community spirit that make this area so special,” said Louise.
Steps & Stories is just one chapter in the anniversary celebrations, with plans afoot for a series of community-based events throughout the year and including the ever-popular August WalkFest.
If the Kintyre Way has played a part in your own story, now is the time to share it. You can revisit precious memories and share your images by sending them to thekintyreway@gmail.com
