Boxing Scotland has once again ‘called up’ Lochaber Phoenix man Connor Bodkin to represent the country in a championship contest.
Seventeen year old Connor, from Lochyside started boxing around five years ago when he came along to the Corpach based Lochaber Phoenix Boxing Club as company for his brother Anton (himself also now a much sought after opponent in Club bouts across the country).
However, Connor found that he had a great affinity and natural talent for the sport, so became a regular in his own right.
After training hard and building up experience through sparring with fellow Lochaber Phoenix boxers as well as training trips to other cubs, he was soon stepping into the ring for bouts both at club level and Boxing Scotland National Championship where he faced the country’s best boxers in his age and weight class.
After numerous successes he was invited to join the National body’s ‘Pathways’ programme, designed to both encourage and assess young talent which is unique to Boxing Scotland, as the country’s only officially recognised organisation for the sport.
Connor so impressed the National coaches that he was invited to join the “elite’ group of boxers for further development, potentially leading to a place of the Scotland Squad.
Being a member of the Elite boxer team meant he had to train at the High Performance Centre in Glasgow for three or four times a week which saw him having to stay in the city, largely at his own expense such is his commitment to being the best.
As part of the National Squad he has already represented the country at national and international level, in England, Wales and France, as well as Scotland.
In the culmination of a week long training camp in Nancy, Connor took the ring facing the unbeaten French champion with far more bouts under his belt than Connor.
However, true to form, it was Connors’ arm raised in victory at the end of the bout, although he did find a new friend in his former opponent. He has also fought in competitions in England and Wales, picking up many trophies on the way as well as the GB Schoolboys Golden Glove Championship.
Having just returned from another assessment and selection process in Glasgow, Connor was informed that he will once again be representing Scotland in the Four Nations Championships (Youth and Elites) at 80kg. Taking part will be Scotland (who is hosting the event), England, Wales and Northern Ireland, rejoining the contest after a few year’s absence.
While at home, Connor still works on his and skills under the direction of Lochaber Phoenix Coaches, Aidan Donnelly and Charlie Anderson, also sharing his experience with his fellow club boxers, who are also building quite a reputation as worthy opponents across the country, so are in demand for home shows.
Connor said: “I am really delighted to be asked to represent Scotland in this championship, which squire an event with Northern Ireland taking part again.
"Competition was tough to make the team and it is great to be part of it again.
“In preparation last week I was sparring with the Welsh champion who was really strong. Who knows I may be facing him again quite soon in an actual bout”.
