Macaulay Cup – First Round
Kingussie 6 Lochaber 2
Three goals late in the game earned holders Kingussie a 6-2 win over Lochaber.
After scoring four goals for the Kingussie second team on his return from injury the previous week, James Falconer returned to the Kingussie first team starting line-up as did Kieran Macpherson after a spell in Canada.
Lochaber were without defenders Seonaidh Macdonald and Jack Dignan.
Lochaber shocked their hosts when Stuart Callison ran into the D to score the opener after just five minutes.
Ruaridh Anderson levelled on 15 minutes after good wing play from Thomas Borthwick and Roddy Young gave the Kings a 3-1 half-time lead with efforts on 24 and 33 minutes.
Young turned home a rebound for his first whilst his second was a sweet strike which went just inside the post.
Max Campbell made it 4-2 a minute before the hour when he collected Connor Sweeney’s low free-hit from the left before sending a low shot on the turn into the net from the left. Lochaber were now having a good spell in the game, but James Falconer put the tie out of their reach with goals on 77 and 82 minutes.
His first was a strike from the left at the second attempt after a quick passing move whist his second was a superb first-time volley after Savio Genini won a throw up to the right of the D.
Savio Genini rounded off the 6-2 win a minute from time with a wonderful strike from the left.
Kingussie manager Ronald Ross said: “Lochaber are well organised as you’d expect under Ally Ferguson and in Max Campbell at full forward, they have a real focal point.
"Their young goalkeeper Joey MacKay had an excellent game, particularly in the first half when he made a series of excellent saves. We should have been out of
sight in the first half, but Lochaber scored the next goal before having their best spell of the game.
"However, two James Falconer goals, the second a fantastic volley, followed by a spectacular Savio Genini strike rounded off a strong win.”
Lochaber manager Ally Ferguson said: “Whilst there’s no doubt Kingussie were worthy winners, I don’t think the final score truly reflected the game.
"Our young keeper Joey MacKay was outstanding, whilst I’m a bit disappointed with the protection he had in front of him. Seonaidh Macdonald sustained an injury at training when he went over on his ankle and Jack Dignan, who played so well the week before against Skye, was missing whilst he supported his brother in the Scottish Six Day Trials.
“When we got it back to 3-2, we had good momentum and pressure until Kingussie scored to make it 4-2 almost on the 80-minute mark. Uncharacteristically for this squad, our heads dropped, and Kingussie went onto score twice and that was the game over despite the lads up front pushing for another goal.
“We had chances and a fair bit of the game, but we unfortunately came up short compared to the cup holders. Whilst we’re very disappointed in the result and the
scoreline, there are positives for us from the game such as scoring two goals against Kingussie and our younger players coming into the team and doing well.
“We’ll dust ourselves down and get back at it at training on Tuesday and pick up on where we can do better and focus on our league game against Fort William on
Saturday.

Newtonmore 2 Kinlochshiel 0
‘More took the lead on 29 minutes when Drew MacDonald’s hit-in dropped between the penalty spot and the D. Conor Jones was quickly in to slip the ball back to Brodie MacBean who finished with a half-swing.
The second half was 19 minutes old when substitute Struan Ross, just minutes on the field, won possession before beating a couple of defenders to double ‘More’s lead.
Newtonmore manager Peter Ross said: “We missed some chances, but we were very good in defence, especially Rory Kennedy. I was impressed by ‘Shiel’s Ali Nixon.
‘Shiel boss Willie MacRae added: “We were okay in the first half, but we lost our way after that, even with the wind in our favour. Rory Kennedy and Drew MacDonald were good for Newtonmore whilst young Arron Jack was best for us.
“Jay MacRae went close near the end, but we didn’t create enough.”
Newtonmore now host a Badenoch derby against Kingussie in the next round. Kinlochshiel and Newtonmore meet again on Saturday, this time in the league at
Rèaraig.
Caberfeidh 0 Fort William 2
After losing out to Caberfeidh in the MacTavish Cup at the same venue just two weeks earlier, Fort William got their revenge to reach the Macaulay Cup quarter-finals.
Jamie MacIntosh and Russell MacKenzie returned for Caberfeidh, but Ben Macdonald was unavailable. Farquhar MacRae has joined Cabers from Beauly.
Lachie Shaw put the Fort ahead on 31 minutes, finishing off a great passing move up-field with a shot on the turn from the right of the D which flew over the keeper.
Caberfeidh custodian Kevin Bartlett saved a Mark Fraser penalty before Hamish Shaw sealed the win a minute from time. Shaw stopped a Kevin Bartlett clearance
from the left of his D, and he sent a shot from distance into the net before the keeper could recover.
Fort manager Scott McNeil, a former goalie himself, said afterwards: “It was an excellent game, and their keeper Kevin Bartlett made some outstanding stops,
including the penalty.
"We were worthy of our victory, no question. We were up here a fortnight ago in the MacTavish and Caberfeidh were up for it that day and put us to
the sword. But we came up today with fire in our belly, determined that we could get a result and I thought, to a man, my team were outstanding today.
"Our keeper made a great save early on in the match, and the defence defended very strongly. The midfield did their job superbly, up and down the park, and the forwards linked together numerous times to get numerous shots on goal, so I’m absolutely chuffed with the result and to move into the next round.”
Caberfeidh manager Garry Reid added: “I thought it was a good cup-tie, and it went right to the wire. We were throwing everything at them towards the end, and we conceded the second goal in the last minutes.
“Fort William probably deserved it overall with our keeper making several good saves. We’re disappointed to go out of the cup, but it wasn’t for a lack of effort.”
Fort William will now visit the victors from the tie between Lovat and Skye in the next round.
Fort William have a Mowi Premiership derby against Lochaber at Spean Bridge on Saturday whilst Caberfeidh host Col Glen.

Lovat 2 Kinlochshiel 7

Rory Barclay in the opening minute, Duncan Macmillan after five minutes gave Kinlochshiel a two-goal cushion. Archie MacRae then rattled home a five-minute hat-trick with goals on 14, 16 and 19 minutes before Corin Jack netted on 22 minutes to make it 6-0 and have ‘Shiel in full control.
Ian MacLachlan pulled a goal back on 38 minutes to make it 6-1 at half-time. Dario Marshall countered again for Lovat on 55 minutes before Duncan Macmillan got his second goal of the match 20 minutes from time.
Section 3
Inveraray 1 Fort William 3
The Fort William juniors won 3-1 against the Inveraray junior.
The Fort led through Cal Brown on 13 minutes, but Evan Robertson levelled for Inveraray on 22 minutes.A second from Cal Brown on 42 minutes and a strike from the returning Mark Grant on 73 minutes sent the holders through.
Lochside Rovers 5 Lochaber 3
Lochside Rovers progressed with a 5-3 victory over the Lochaber second team at Ganavan.
Scott MacMillan completed his two-game ban for the home side, whilst Joe MacVicar started having played the second half with Oban Camanachd. Logan Black was unavailable as he is now cup-tied having played five games for the seniors.
Lochaber lost Danny Delaney in the opening minute when he was left with a cut near his right eye, but he returned to the field bandaged up just 10 minutes later.
Daniel Duffy got the Oban side off to a good start with smart finishes on 18 and 22 minutes.
However, Rocco Berardelli punished the Lochside defence for not clearing their lines with a goal on 28 minutes.
Lochside responded well though and Lewis Buchanan fired over the keeper on 39 minutes to make it 3-1 at the break.
The Oban side added two more goals to their tally when Joe MacVicar finished smartly from the edge of the box on 57 minutes and, just a couple of minutes after,
16-year-old Finn MacKechnie netted from outside the box although his shot took a deflection off a defender.
Craig Macmillan was having a good game at full centre, bossing the midfield area but he was replaced shortly after receiving a booking from referee Cat Whyte.
Despite being 5-1 down, Lochaber kept fighting and Neil MacDonald on 69 minutes and Donald MacRae on 83 minutes cut the lead to two goals.
Lochside had to rely on goalie Ross MacKay who made a good save to prevent a very nervy ending to the game.
Lochside assistant manager Duncan MacMillan said: “It was a good game, I enjoyed it, and we don’t often get the chance to play teams from the north in competitive matches. Lochaber have big, strong players and a good mix of experience.
“We made a decent start with two goals from Daniel Duffy, he’s such a good hitter of the ball, and all the young boys played well including Finn MacKechnie who has a great engine. You can see that they are coming on really well against more physical players.
“It was a tough shift for the players on a hard, bouncy pitch and Lochaber still worked us at 5-1. We lost a bit of momentum after Craig Macmillan came off and we needed Ross MacKay to make a good save near the end.
“We’ll take it though and we’ll then see who comes out on top in the tie between Lochcarron and the Skye second team this weekend as they’ll be our next
opponents in the Sutherland.”
Lochside are at home again on Saturday, this time against the Inveraray second team in Mowi South Division 1.
