Arrival in Port Ellen
If arriving by ferry, enjoy the scenic approach into Port Ellen. If flying into Islay Airport, you’re just 10 mins away from the distilleries.
Three Distillery Walk (Allow 2–3 hours)
Walk from Laphroaig to Lagavulin and then to Ardbeg, along a beautiful coastal path.
Laphroaig Distillery: Take a tour or enjoy a tasting flight.
Lagavulin Distillery: Famous for its peaty character – consider the Warehouse Experience.
Ardbeg Distillery: End the walk with lunch at the Ardbeg café – their seafood chowder is outstanding.
Kildalton Cross & Chapel
Drive (15 mins from Ardbeg) to see one of Scotland’s finest early Christian crosses (8th century). The chapel ruins and surrounding graveyard are atmospheric and peaceful.
Explore Port Ellen
Stroll the village, relax at the beach, or stop by The Islay Hotel for coffee or a dram.
Dinner at Peatzeria (Bowmore)
Head to Bowmore (30 mins drive) and enjoy locally inspired pizzas with a sea view.
Overnight in Bowmore or Port Ellen
Recommended stays: Bowmore House, Glenegedale House, or No. 1 Charlotte Street in Port Ellen.
Machir Bay & Kilchoman Distillery
Drive to the west coast to walk along Machir Bay, one of Islay’s most beautiful beaches.
Stop at Kilchoman Distillery, the island’s farm distillery – try their Sanaig or Machir Bay bottlings.
Optional Detour:
Visit Islay Woollen Mill near Bridgend – historic and still weaving tweed today.
Lunch at the Port Charlotte Hotel
Enjoy fresh seafood or local lamb with a view of Loch Indaal.
Museum of Islay Life (Port Charlotte)
Learn about island life from prehistoric times to present.
Bruichladdich Distillery Tour
Famous for unpeated whiskies and innovation. Try Octomore if you’re feeling brave.
Sunset at Saligo Bay or Loch Gruinart
For golden-hour views and possible otter or barnacle goose sightings (especially in winter).
Dinner at Bridgend Hotel or The Lochside Hotel (Bowmore)
Excellent food and local produce, great whisky selection.
Overnight stay in the same accommodation as Day 1 or choose a different village to explore more of the island.
