New figures released reveal that NHS Highlands dispensed over seven million free prescriptions last year.
Research from the Scottish Parliament Information Centre (SPIC) reveals that 7,060,967 perscriptions were released by the body in 2025.
On average households across Scotland received 44.5 prescriptions each in 2024 to 2025.
Commenting on the figures, Argyll and Bute MSP, Jenni Minto stated that free prescriptions were part of Scotland’s continued commitment to cost-of-living support.
She added: The cost of essentials such as groceries and energy bills has continued to soar putting a strain on household finances.
“Thanks to abolishing prescription charges in 2011, people do not need to worry about being able to pay for essential medicines for themselves or their families and households are saving an average of nearly £450 a year.”
The £450 figure comes from multiplying the average cost of a prescription in England – £9.90 – by the average number of prescriptions used by Scottish households.
