Macaulay Cup – First Round
Oban Camanachd 3 Inveraray 1
The Macaulay Cup Final will take place in Oban once again on Saturday July 25 2026 and the first tie of this year’s competition was Oban Camanachd’s 3-1 win over Inveraray.
Oban Camanachd were without skipper Daniel MacVicar who was on holiday, but Malcolm Clark returned to the squad.
Inveraray’s Robert Wood suffered a hand injury in the previous week’s win over Bute, but Lewis Montgomery was free of suspension.
When Malcolm Clark burst through on goals on 12 minutes, he was tripped up inside the D and referee Craig Scott pointed to the spot. Daniel Maccuish struck the penalty well, under the keeper to make it 1-0.
The home side were unable to build on their lead though as Coll MacKay lost his marker to level the tie on 16 minutes following a disputed corner.
Oban Camanachd got themselves back in front thanks to Lewis Cameron who took a good first touch to create the chance and he lashed the ball into the top of the net to make it 2-1 with 19 minutes gone.
Lewis Cameron eventually added a third on 81 minutes, waiting for his chance before producing a calm finish.
Oban Camanachd will be at home again in the quarter-finals, this time against Mowi National Division side Bute.
Speaking after the game, Oban Camanachd assistant manager Iain MacMillan said: “Take nothing away from Inveraray, a well-drilled side who were well up for it, but this was probably our worst performance of the season, particularly in the second half.
"The overall result was probably never in doubt, but we lacked intensity, took too many touches, got too involved in the physical side of things and just didn’t play as a team.
“Inveraray defended really well, and Scott MacLachlan played well in their goals, he was pretty solid.
“After a slow start, I thought we would kick on after going ahead but, if anything, it was Inveraray who pushed on and it only took them five minutes to reply. It was a very disappointing goal for us to lose. We were still arguing over the corner when they were taking it and no one followed Coll MacKay, and although it was a nice finish, it was a poor goal for us to lose; a loss of concentration and not following our men.
“Things on the field don’t just happen unless you make them happen, but we were too lackadaisical at times whilst Inveraray were fighting for everything.
“Our defensive unit of Gary McKerracher. Garry Lord, Louie MacFarlane and Andy Macdonald were the best part of the team, and they kept winning the ball and
feeding the forward line who can’t complain about a lack of ball.
“It took us a long time to get the third goal, despite plenty opportunities, through Lewis Cameron who was the pick of the forwards.
“We’ll get back to some hard work at training this week so that we get a better reaction in the league meeting with Skye which is always a tough game. It sounds
spoilt to say we won the game today but we have to be better, our application has to be better, but that’s no reflection on Inveraray who certainly gave us a game.”
Oban Camanachd, sponsored by TSL Contractors, return to Mowi Premiership action on Saturday when Skye Camanachd visit Mossfield.
Inveraray have Balliemore Cup first round tie against Strathglass at The Winterton.
Oban Celtic 1 Aberdour 2
David Murray hit a great strike from distance, into the top corner of the net, to give Aberdour a 10-minute lead.
However, Duncan MacEwan shot through a crowded goal area, across keeper Sam Evans from outside the D on right to level on 26 minutes after the visitors failed to deal with Pearce MacBeth’s corner from the right.
Aberdour’s David Mackenzie scored what proved to be the winner on 54 minutes, bursting forward from midfield to score.
Oban Celtic, sponsored by The Oban Inn, don’t have a fixture this weekend.
Kyles Athletic 5 Glasgow Mid Argyll 2
Kyles Athletic scored twice in stoppage time to put gloss on their victory.
Luke Thornton put Kyles ahead on 10 minutes but Ross Brown on 16 minutes and Calum Morrison on 26 minutes turned the tie GMA’s way.
However, a second from Luke Thornton on 51 minutes and Ethan Kerr’s goal on 66 minutes had Kyles back in front.
That’s the way it stayed until a couple of minutes into stoppage time when Ethan Kerr got his second and Scott Macdonald made it 5-2 straight from the restart.
Kyles are off to Aberdour in the quarter-finals.
This weekend, Kyles visit Kingussie in the league whilst GMA welcome Beauly in the Ferguson Transport & Shipping Balliemore Cup.
Col Glen 1 Bute 3
Mowi National Division side Bute pulled off a surprise result, beating an understrength Col Glen from the Mowi Premiership.
Col Glen had defeated the same opponents 5-2 at the same venue in the Scottish Sea Farms Glasgow Celtic Society Challenge Cup a fortnight earlier but they trailed 2-0 at the interval through Josh Cowan’s brace on six and 27 minutes.
Cowan’s opener came after some early pressure, and he blasted the ball into the roof of the net. His second came when he lost his marker to score.
Col Glen had the wind in the second half, but it was Bute who extended their lead on 52 minutes when, after some good passing, Robert Lowrie was played through on goal, and he kept his composure to beat the keeper.
Col Glen fought back, and Bute keeper Stewart Stirling Jnr made some good saves before Murray McClymont pulled a goal back with 11 minutes remaining.
Ollie Adrian, Brandon Wilson and Hunter Black came into they Col Glen side and all did well. It was Bute’s day though and they progress into the next round.
HIS Sutherland Cup – Second Round
Inveraray 1 Fort William 3
The Fort William juniors won 3-1 against the Inveraray juniors at The Winterton.
The Fort led through Cal Brown on 13 minutes, but Evan Robertson levelled for Inveraray on 22 minutes.
A second from Cal Brown on 42 minutes and a strike from the returning Mark Grant on 73 minutes sent the holders through.
Lochside Rovers 5 Lochaber 3
Lochside Rovers progressed with a 5-3 victory over the Lochaber second team at Ganavan.
Scott MacMillan completed his two-game ban for the home side, whilst Joe MacVicar started having played the second half with Oban Camanachd. Logan Black was unavailable as he is now cup-tied having played five games for the seniors.
Lochaber lost Danny Delaney in the opening minute when he was left with a cut near his right eye, but he returned to the field bandaged up just 10 minutes later.
Daniel Duffy got the Oban side off to a good start with smart finishes on 18 and 22 minutes.
However, Rocco Berardelli punished the Lochside defence for not clearing their lines with a goal on 28 minutes.
Lochside responded well though and Lewis Buchanan fired over the keeper on 39 minutes to make it 3-1 at the break.
The Oban side added two more goals to their tally when Joe MacVicar finished smartly from the edge of the box on 57 minutes and, just a couple of minutes after,
16-year-old Finn MacKechnie netted from outside the box although his shot took a deflection off a defender.
Craig Macmillan was having a good game at full centre, bossing the midfield area but he was replaced shortly after receiving a booking from referee Cat Whyte.
Despite being 5-1 down, Lochaber kept fighting and Neil MacDonald on 69 minutes and Donald MacRae on 83 minutes cut the lead to two goals.
Lochside had to rely on goalie Ross MacKay who made a good save to prevent a very nervy ending to the game.
Lochside assistant manager Duncan MacMillan said: “It was a good game, I enjoyed it, and we don’t often get the chance to play teams from the north in competitive matches. Lochaber have big, strong players and a good mix of experience.
“We made a decent start with two goals from Daniel Duffy, he’s such a good hitter of the ball, and all the young boys played well including Finn MacKechnie who has a great engine. You can see that they are coming on really well against more physical players.
“It was a tough shift for the players on a hard, bouncy pitch and Lochaber still worked us at 5-1. We lost a bit of momentum after Craig Macmillan came off and we needed Ross MacKay to make a good save near the end.
“We’ll take it though and we’ll then see who comes out on top in the tie between Lochcarron and the Skye second team this weekend as they’ll be our next
opponents in the Sutherland.”
Lochside are at home again on Saturday, this time against the Inveraray second team in Mowi South Division 1.
Kyles Athletic 4 Strachur-Dunoon 1
The Kyles Athletic juniors won 4-1 against Strachur-Dunoon.
Conor Guidici on eight minutes and Ollie MacVicar on 23 minutes made it 2-0 but Roddy Cairns beat John Whyte in the home goal on 37 minutes to make it 2-1 at the break.
Logan Sim struck twice on 70 and 89 minutes to complete the 4-1 win.
