On behalf of Food Standards Scotland (FSS), Argyll and Bute Council has posted an announcement making local shops aware of an urgent recall of Jolly Rancher Sweets.
The council’s warning to business owners comes after FSS put out an alert yesterday advising consumers not to buy or consume specific Jolly Rancher products, because "they are potentially unsafe and do not meet UK market legal requirements."
FSS added: "The affected products contain mineral oil, which isn’t allowed in food in the UK and may pose a food safety risk if consumed regularly over a sustained period of time.
"Although the levels consumers are exposed to are likely to be low, they may present a risk to health because they contain Mineral Oil Aromatic Hydrocarbons (MOAH), and Mineral Oil Saturated Hydrocarbons (MOSH).
"Consumption of the affected sweets is of toxicological concern, especially in younger age groups and where consumers eat a lot of the products or eat them regularly."
The Jolly Rancher brand is owned by Hershey, an American multinational confectionary company.
In its message warning local businesses to remove the affected products from sale, Argyll and Bute Council said: "The Hershey Company has stopped trading Hershey’s brand Jolly Rancher products in the UK, other than Sours, (which are compliant), ice pops and slushies.
"They do not supply any other Jolly Rancher products formulated for the UK market.
"The Hershey Company has worked and continues to work collaboratively with the FSA (who have represented UK interests in discussions).
"However, despite the proactive action to remove unauthorised and unsafe products from UK markets in 2024, and their subsequent decision not to supply the UK market going forward, other businesses continue to import The Hershey Company’s products for the UK market."
