On Friday February 9 the North Argyll Blackface Sheep Breeders Association held a well-attended stock judging event at Dalmally auction mart by kind permission of United Auctions.
A total of 113 competitors took part, with another great turnout of young farmers.
A spokesperson for the association said: “The whole thing was overseen by our judge for the evening Mr Martin Wood, from West Bracklin, Callander. His champion sheep on the night was a Gimmer from Donald McVicar, Lephinchapel, she is bred by a £4,500 Upper Wellwood Sire and was out of an £8,000 Crossflat mum. With the Jacksons from the Pole also judged to have brought the best pen of stock on the night.
“In the stock judging results, the Individual and North Eastern trophy was won by Rab ‘The bald eagle’ Hamilton, having amassed a fantastic 374 points! In the fiercely contested Young Farmers competition Mr David MacArthur won, winning the Suie lodge cup too, with a score of 360 points.
“Then in the Ladies section, winner of the Youngs Animal Health shield was Dawn MacKinnon with 358 points. Also celebrating was young Isla Murdoch, who won the Under-14s class and coming in third in the ladies competition with 350 points, receiving the delicious box of chocolates.
“Finally, Niall Shaw, Thomas Muirhead and Ben Mackinnon won the team competition, with a combined total of 1,058 points.
“In the open tup hogg competition after the Stock judging, it was a tup hogg from J. Macpherson and sons, Balliemeanoch that won.
“He is a £3,200 Dalchirla, bought In Dalmally last October. He’s by a homebred son of 45K Nunnerie.
“The club would like to say a huge thank you to the judge, all the organisers that helped put it all together, everyone who brought stock, the fantastic catering service and all our sponsors for their continued support. Such a brilliant night would not have happened without the time, dedication, and support of everyone involved. We would also like to thank everyone for coming and taking part making it a success, and we hope they enjoyed it as much as we did!”
The branch’s next event is the AGM on Wednesday March 6 at 8pm at the Fall of Lora Hotel, Connel.
