To celebrate 100 years since Whiting Bay Hall was opened in July 1926, Whiting Bay Memories group will be hosting a free exhibition covering 100 years of the hall and village life.
The centenary exhibition will take place at Whiting Bay Hall over three days starting on the weekend of Saturday July 11.
Among the many items on display during the exhibition will be a wealth of historic documents and photographs that help to tell the story of the village hall, from the very early stages when it was just an idea to the present day. The exhibition will also feature information on the people who helped establish the hall, the official opening, and other important documents and photographs.
Past and present users of the hall, including over 50-years of drama and other significant events over the past century will also play an important part in the exhibition. The exhibition will feature a music section that will include Arran Music Festivals, Arran Junior Singers and September weekend films.
At the heart of the exhibition will be an impressive banner featuring 100 Stitched Stories to celebrate the 100-year milestone. Each one of the 100 individual panels feature activities and events that have taken place in the hall over the last century and the banner is a culmination of two years’ work by talented stitchers and weavers from the village and from across island.
A decade-by-decade series of exhibitions will cover: a 1926 village map and a comparison to 2026; a look at the 1930s, including the Boys’ Brigade; Whiting Bay at War in the 1940s; 1950 beach fun, bus shelters, buildings, bowling and “busy lives”; 1960’s the “times they are a-changin’”; a tour of the village in the 1970s; 1980s fun days; Whiting Bay Golf Club centenary and “things we could do in the 90s”; the millennium and beyond; Whiting Bay news; and “Arran Banner - the early years”.

Barbara I’Anson of Whiting Bay Memories said: ““Our village hall is a very special place, if walls could talk, there would be some wonderful tales to tell!” Sadly, the walls can’t talk, but Whiting Bay Memories can research and gather together many tales of events with pictures and interesting facts to tell the hall story”.
“There will be interesting items to look at and games from ‘back in the day’ to play. Please come along and enjoy this exhibition - it’s new, there are things to see and things to do and it will be very different from previous exhibitions, but you will still be able to find some of your old favourite pictures.
“This is also an important opportunity to help raise funds for the next 100 years of the hall with the option to purchase a souvenir picture of the village hall donated by artist James Taylor. Embedded into this beautiful artwork are the fingerprints of the memories group and the hall committee. A wonderful poem by the artist comes with the picture and it is an excellent gift idea for anyone with special memories made at the hall.”
Whiting Bay Memories meet in the Whiting Bay lesser hall every Monday morning between 11am and 12.30pm. The group also hosts an informative and extensive history of Whiting Bay and its residents on its website at whiting-bay-memories.com/
