Football season on Arran has officially begun with two fixtures taking place in the Arran Dairies league over the last week.
The first fixture saw Southend hosting Shiskine at Sandbraes Park in Whiting Bay. Shiskine scored an early goal through Reece Ferguson and held onto their lead in the first half. Early into the second half Southend equalised through Liam Bremner. Southend continued exerting pressure on their opponents and were rewarded when Jamie Worthington scored another goal for the side. However, Shiskine ran out of steam as they were chasing the game. Southend capitalised on this and Liam Bremner and Ryan Armstrong both added two goals to bring the score up to 4-1 at the final whistle. Man of the match went to Josh Williams.
In the second fixture, defending champions Lamlash hosted “auld enemy” Brodick at Lamlash. The rivalry was apparent with both teams vying for position and a number of crunching challenges being witnessed by the referee. Brodick took the lead through Alfie Gilmore and shortly after Kyle McNicol also scored, placing Brodick 2-0 up. Lamlash had numerous opportunities but could not finish them. With a corner towards the end of the first half, David Heenan scored with a header, taking the score at half-time to 2-1 to Brodick. Substitutions made by both sides aimed for further goals, with Alfie Gilmore finding the opportunity to score again. Lamlash eventually picked up in the last 10 minutes and were awarded several free kicks. The team received a consolation goal through Jamie Sillars but it was a case of “to little too late” and Brodick won 3-2. Man of the match was awarded to Callum Clark for his midfield display.
The next fixtures will see Shiskine taking on Lamlash on Friday May 15 at Shiskine with a 6.30pm kick off. On Monday May 18, Brodick will play against Southend at Brodick with a 6.30 kick off.
