The CalMac crew of MV Loch Shira are being praised after successfully rescuing two paddle boarders from the water near Largs, during an evening response to a mayday call.
At 9.30pm on Friday May 8, CalMac was notified by HM Coastguard that two paddle boarders were in difficulty in the Castle Bay area.
On arrival at the scene, the crew found the casualties thanks to lights on their equipment and a mobile phone torch. Despite attempting to swim ashore, the combination of tide and buoyancy equipment meant they were unable to reach land.
Given the navigational hazards in the area – including moored vessels, moorings and shallow water – a ramp recovery was not possible. The crew therefore launched the rescue boat and brought them safely aboard.
Both were showing early signs of hypothermia and were estimated to have been in the water for around 40 minutes.
To minimise time in the cold, the rescue boat proceeded directly to Largs Pier, where emergency services and shore staff were waiting. An ambulance attended and the casualties were transferred into the care of the appropriate agencies.
The Loch Shira returned to Largs at 10pm, allowing the final Largs–Cumbrae round trip of the day to operate as scheduled.
The rescued pair travelled on board the vessel the following day, appeared to be in good health, and personally thanked the crew for their actions.
Ross Parker, Head of Fleet at CalMac, said: “This is an excellent example of calm, competent, professional teamwork in challenging conditions. The crew of MV Loch Shira acted quickly, launched the rescue boat and ensured the two casualties were brought to safety. Their swift and decisive actions made all the difference, and they exemplified the best of CalMac."
