The first Mid Argyll Arts Association concert of 2026 was an outstanding performance by Chloé Piano Trio of very high standard.
This trio is a young, energetic, and very dynamic group of musicians with outstanding track record since they formed in 2017.
The programme was innovative and varied, with the first piece by American-Indian composer Reena Esmail: Piano Trio 1.
The audience was immediately transported to a warmer climate for the monsoon season where the melodic framework Indian Raags were blended with Western harmonic structures, creating the basis for the rain drops, flowing water and forceful swirling tides. A wonderful pieces of music, integrating traditional Indian scales into a familiar Western Piano Trio structure.
Next we heard Joseph Haydn’s Piano Trio in F -sharp minor No.40. The intricate and technically demanding piano writing by Haydn was handled superbly by pianist George Todica, with his sensitive interpretation of the contrasting emotions of melancholy and quick and cheerful passages.
The third piece on the programme was Amy Beach: Piano Trio in A minor, op. 150, composed near the end of her life and showing a more Impressionistic style than her earlier work.
Again, the piano served as a powerful driving force throughout the piece, managed beautifully by George Todica, but the violin and cello had to manage the very quick and delicate passages in this piece, which is much more complicated rather than just playing a loud and dramatic climax at the end.
Both the violinist and cellist are highly skilled musicians, working hard in this piece, and they both demonstrated their virtuosity on their instruments extremely well. An absolutely delightful piece.
The last piece on the programme was Anton Dvořák: Dumky Piano Trio No. 4 in E Minor, Op 90.
This is a trio based on six Dumkys ( a Dumka is a Ukrainian melancholic folk ballad ) which shifts between slow, sad sections and very fast, joyous passages.
This was delivered to us in the most sparkling and zesty way imagined, with tremendous handling of tempo shifts, showing us what a strong, virtuoso ensemble can deliver.
Chloé Piano Trio really demonstrated their shared love and passion of Chamber Music with this piece, and was awarded by the audience stamping their feet in appreciation at the end.
The encore was the third movement from Claude Debussy’s Piano Trio in G major, played with sensitive interpretation by the Trio. A fitting ending to a fantastic performance!
What makes Chloé Piano Trio stand out as a world class chamber music group is their amazing interaction when performing.
They can only be described as ’energetic’ as a group, and there is an unspoken understanding between the three members - Maria Gîlicel (violin), Jobine Siekman (cello), and George Todica (piano).
They have a very strong, vivid and engaging musical dialogue going on at all times, with constant eye contact to make sure they are all on the same page when following the music together. And it really works wonders.
It was a wonderful concert, and the feedback from the audience was overwhelmingly positive.
We will welcome Chloe Piano Trio back in 2027 with open arms.
