South Kintyre Development Trust (SKDT) is calling on the community to step forward and help secure the future of some of Campbeltown’s most important assets as it works to address ongoing financial difficulties.
The trust, which owns and operates Campbeltown Town Hall, SKDT Hall and the Robert Black Memorial Helipad, has announced plans to hold an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) in the week commencing June 8.
The meeting will allow members of the community to help shape the organisation’s future.
In a statement, SKDT said it is working with support partners Development Trusts Association Scotland (DTAS) and Inspiralba to explore options and identify a sustainable way forward.
Chairman Christophe Adie said the trust faces a significant financial gap, with operating costs far exceeding current income.
“SKDT needs to generate around £15,000 per month to operate and maintain its community assets,” he said. “At present, income from lettings and events is around £6,000 per month.
“We have historically relied on funding from various groups, but this funding pot has declined dramatically in recent years.”
To help address the shortfall, the trust is encouraging greater use of its venues while also seeking new ideas and involvement from local residents.
“We are only a few volunteers and three members of staff who work tirelessly – often late nights and long weeks – to bring people’s events to fruition,” he said. “From weddings and birthdays to gigs, shows and exhibitions, these spaces are at the heart of community life.
“Where else in the town would have provided such a fitting reception for the King’s recent visit?”
The trust is now appealing for more volunteers and community participation.
“We need help from local people willing to volunteer their time to make the lives of the whole community more fulfilling,” said Mr Adie. “There are too few of us to do everything that needs to be done to maintain these important assets.”
Ahead of the EGM, SKDT is preparing to recruit new directors to its board. Anyone wishing to stand must first become a member of the trust.
Membership is open to anyone aged 16 or over who lives in the South Kintyre (PA28) area and supports the trust’s aims.
Applications can be requested by emailing membership@skdt.org or collected from the town hall foyer.
To be eligible to vote at the upcoming EGM, new members must register by Friday, May 8.
Following the meeting, the trust plans to carry out wider community consultation to gather ideas on how its facilities can best serve local needs while remaining financially sustainable.
In the meantime, SKDT is urging residents to continue booking events and making use of its venues to help boost income.
“The renovation of SKDT Hall is nearly complete, and we hope it will be used more frequently by community groups,” added Mr Adie. “We are motivated to recover, particularly to protect these assets for the future.”
