CalMac has today announced a second consultation on the Isle of Mull to discuss how ferries will be deployed as new vessels enter the fleet.
Six new major vessels are scheduled to be delivered to CalMac’s aging fleet in the coming years, with one, the MV Glen Sannox, already in service for 12 months serving Arran.
With their arrival, three aging major vessels, MV Isle of Arran, MV Isle of Mull and MV Isle of Lewis, have been earmarked for retirement once the new vessels arrive.
The vessels are approaching 43, 39 and 31 years in service respectively.
CalMac previously announced a round of meetings on affected islands, with one already scheduled to take place in Craignure Village Hall, on January 28 between 4pm and 7pm.
Now the ferry operator has announced a second meeting on the island in Fionnphort to give residents of the Ross of Mull and Iona more of a chance to have their say.
This meeting will take place in the Columba Centre in Fionnphort on Thursday 29 January, from 9.30am to 11am.
In December, CalMac published its draft Vessel Deployment, Disposal and Redelivery Plan ready for community consultation. It sets out an initial plan as to how existing major vessels will be redeployed or exit the fleet as the five major new vessels currently under construction join the fleet.
MV Glen Rosa, MV Lochmor and MV Claymore are the next vessels due to arrive.
The plan allows for CalMac retaining a spare resilience vessel to support services across the network.
A CalMac spokesperson said: “The arrival of six modern, larger, more powerful vessels, which started with MV Glen Sannox in January 2025, will see half of our major vessel fleet renewed. This will bring service enhancements to several islands on the network. Alongside this, we want to plan thoroughly for how we best use the existing vessels in the fleet.
“We want to develop this plan in partnership with island communities and we’re coming to talk to people on Mull and Iona as an initial scoping exercise has identified the vessel they are currently served by could change. It’s important to us that we capture the views of people using services and develop a plan that best meets their needs.”
