A statutory public consultation will seek the public’s views on the relocation of the 2-18 Tobermory Campus.
Councillors today approved plans to launch a statutory consultation in terms of the Schools (Consultation) (Scotland) Act 2010, which will run from August 24 to October 2 2026.
It will seek to consult children and families on the council’s plans to close the current Tobermory High School, Primary School, and ELC site when the new purpose built Tobermory Campus is completed.
As part of the consultation plans, dedicated sessions will take place with pupils across the affected schools to ensure children and young people’s views are fully captured as part of the decision-making process.
In addition, a public meeting will take place s to give the community an opportunity to hear more about the proposal, ask questions and share their views.
Affected schools include Tobermory High, Primary and ELC, Salen Primary and ELC, Dervaig Primary, Ulva Primary and Lochdonhead Primary.
Bunessan Primary and ELC and Iona Primary will not be consulted after the council voted in March 2025 to build the new school in Tobermory, excluding the Ross of Mull from the catchment area and maintaining the status quo of children from the area boarding in Oban for secondary education.
Campaigners are still in discussions with the Scottish Government to fight this decision. Argyll’s MSP, Jenni Minto, has consistently backed the campaign.
Councillor Kieron Green, Policy Lead for Education, said: “The Committee’s decision to proceed to consultation is an important step in shaping the future of education in Tobermory. This proposal offers the opportunity to create a modern, purpose-built campus that will significantly improve the learning environment for our children and young people.
“We are committed to listening closely to the views of our communities, including pupils, parents, staff and local residents. I would encourage everyone with an interest in the future of Tobermory Campus to take part in the consultation and share their views.”
The council will publish full details of the consultation, including the proposal paper and how to respond, on its website ahead of the start date.
