The MOKRUN began from a casual chat in a Glasgow pub and a post on the Kintyre Forum, inspired by a desire to revive old running routes The idea quickly gained popularity, and on 28 May 2006, 350 runners from Kintyre, and beyond took part in the first race. The founding committee included Hendrie, John & Tom Barbour, Elaine McGeachy, and Helen Gillies.
Over the past 20 years, the Mull of Kintyre Half Marathon and 10K has transformed from a small local race into an internationally recognised event, now attracting over 1,000 runners from across the globe each year. Celebrated for its breathtaking coastal scenery, warm community welcome, and inclusive spirit, it’s no wonder the race has earned a reputation as one of the most beautiful and friendly events on the Scottish running calendar.
But the impact of the MOK run goes far beyond race day.
On the back of its growing success, a vibrant running culture has taken root in the area. Campbeltown Running Club, Jog Scotland Campbeltown, and MOK Triathlon Club have all been established in recent years, offering opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to get active, train together, and enjoy the physical and mental benefits of regular exercise. These clubs have become pillars of the local fitness community, fostering friendships and encouraging healthy lifestyles all year round.
But the heart of the MOK Run lies in the people who make it happen.
The event is entirely organised by a dedicated committee of 11 local volunteers, whose passion and commitment keep the race thriving. At the helm is Race Director Gail Williams , who has been part of the committee for over 19 years and has led as Race Director for the past decade. Her leadership and tireless work behind the scenes have been key to the event’s enduring success.
Another proud feature of the event is the Junior Fun Run, which brings the energy and enthusiasm of the next generation to the weekend celebrations. Open to children of all ages, it’s a fun and inclusive race designed to inspire young runners and promote a lifelong love of sport.
Whether you’re a seasoned athlete chasing a personal best or a first-time runner soaking in the scenery, the Mull of Kintyre Half Marathon and 10K offers a unique experience steeped in local pride. Its growth over the past two decades is a tribute not only to the stunning setting, but to the incredible community behind it—volunteers, organisers, clubs, and runners—who have turned a single race into a thriving movement and it could not go ahead without them . They all know who they are as too many to list here.
As it heads into its next chapter, the MOK run continues to put Campbeltown on the map and proves just how far a small idea can go when driven by passion, perseverance, and a united community spirit.
