Early years classes at Corrie and Pirnmill Primary Schools will remain temporarily closed for the 2026–27 academic session due to no early years children being registered.
The decision was approved by North Ayrshire Council’s Cabinet on 2 June, as it considered a new policy which will guide how planned temporary closures of schools and early years are managed.
The new policy reflects updated Scottish Government guidance and will apply to early years settings, primary and secondary schools across North Ayrshire.
The report before councillors noted that no primary or secondary establishments in North Ayrshire have been temporarily closed.
However, it highlighted that the early years classes at Corrie and Pirnmill Primary Schools will remain temporarily closed.
The situation will continue to be reviewed annually, with the option to reopen if and when demand returns.
A council spokesperson said the continued temporary closure of the early years classes is "in line with the new guidance from the Scottish Government which aims to ensure all decisions made in connection with a planned temporary closure of educational provisions are transparent, evidence-based and focused on the needs of children and young people".
Councillor Margaret Johnson, Cabinet Member for Education and Young People, said: “Temporary closures are exceptional, time-limited measures and are considered where there is a realistic prospect of reopening.
“The new policy places a strong emphasis on educational benefit, ensuring that the interests of children and young people are central to all decision-making. It also requires early and meaningful engagement with parents, carers, communities and staff where any temporary closure is being considered.”
As part of the new guidelines adopted by the cabinet on Tuesday, an annual report will be brought to future meetings of the cabinet, setting out any proposed temporary closures in future years as part of the council’s efforts to strengthen transparency and accountability.
